Default ?? STOCK H22 TURBO ??

I have a JDM H22 swapped EK that I love to drive but caught the boost bug. I'm wanting to turbo it and was wondering what kind of numbers I could expect on a stock motor at a safe psi? (I heard between 6-10psi is managable). I have a Walbro 255 fuel pump, AEM fuel rail & regulator, Skunk2 cam gears, Unorthodox underdrive pulleys, 2 1/4 straight pipe (no cat) into Arospeed exhaust, and would tune w/Hondata s200. What size injectors and fast-spooling turbo would be best, and would the CRP Turbo Ramhorn manifold be a good choice for this setup?... It's the nicest one I've found yet. I'm wanting the most out of my stock motor but staying on the safe side knowing that H22's have FRM sleeves and weak ringlands. I have another block that I'll build on down the road. Knowledgeable tuners please give your advice, thank you much.

There are plenty of articles on H22 Turbo setups, please search, and use the Archives as part of the search feature to get more hits.

The GT30 series have ballbearings reach boost early and have almost no turbo lag. Sweet H22 setup for daily street use. I hear that using a non harmonic pulley can support vibration that causes problems with engines and especially with stock H22 oilpump gears. They can tend to shatter with higher boost levels and high revs. Pro drive and others make good aftermarket gears.
Mahle makes a newer piston that is compatable with FMR sleeves. They are around $400. Biggest issue is getting someone who is knowledgeble to do the cylinder prep. Supposedly some Porches use FMR sleeves and places that do Porche engine building could be a good bet. The FMR sleeves are strong enough to handle 18lbs. easily with a decent tune. (400 - 450 whp or so)
Good luck. 400+ whp H22s are great as daily drivers.
With your setup and a decent tune, 10 lbs. shouldn't be a problem. (300+ whp)

Thanx 4 the info bro. I'm actually planning on running those Mahle Golds later on down the road. I got a chance to briefly speak with Tyler Hara who races in the NHRA and was one of the 1st I could find on the net using the Mahle Golds. He's ran a 10.3 and has hit over 30psi (600+ whp) w/those pistons and Crower rods, no problems!! I'd like to see a B series pull that w/no sleeves and a stock bore piston, ha.
I haven't heard anything bad about Unorthodox pulleys, or oil pump wear. Infact I see many high horsepower cars using them on the streets, I have to look into that.
You say a GT30 turbo for my stock H22? Aren't those $1200 and rated for like 500hp applications? I'm no turbo guru but it seems like it would be too much being that I could only pull out about 300hp from my stock motor. What other good turbos would be ideal for making around 300whp? Something more affordable...

There is no need to go with Mahle Gold pistons/rods for this kind of daily setup unless you feel as though your budget can handle the lack of cost effectiveness, and can deal w/ replacement parts costs and specficiations when/if needed. Lest we forget that the person you mentioned in NHRA has some dealings with the company and might get a SLIGHT discount on the setup since he more than likely purchases the parts in bulk for his SEVERAL engines that he uses, for he expects them could blow any minute.. Don't try to compare your cost and budget with his. Its called APPROPRIATED COMPANY SPONSOR.

Thanks for the insight, I'd be very happy w/300whp on my H22. I was talking about Mahle Golds later on down the road when the funds allow me to build my spare H22 block. And i wasn't trying to compare my cost & budget with the NHRA guys' setup, I was merely using his numbers as an example of the technology advancement of the H22 and what could be accomplished w/these revolutionary pistons. I'm not worried about them tho, I'm just trying to get boosted, and gradually build up as my urge to turn the boost gauge up increases. I'll use those threads to decide on my build up, thanks.

Did some additional searching....what about the Garrett GT28R for my 300+hp goal? Seems like it may be a little better than a T3/T04E .57 trim. What would you recommend between the two?

For that litre displacement and response, no the GT28R would not be a good choice for that for the hp that you're looking for. It is not very effective in the upper RPM band. READ the 3rd link I gave on the turbos that made this power...... I did all the legwork for you.. Please take advantage of that search.

Ok...read, thanks again. Another question, would a T3/T04E .60 trim be any better for me than a .57 trim like the other 300hp guys have used? I see many of these turbos on Ebay decently priced that say Garrett internals, or have a 3 month to 1 year warranty, are these worth trying or should I go staight to Garrett, or Turbonetics etc.?

i have a customer running around making 360whp stock internals for a long time now. sc61 turbo.

the h22 is a bigger motor and likes a little bit bigger turbo than the b series do

take off those unorthodox pulleys now....trust me.

if i was you, i'd get a gt35r turbo. a little pricey, but once you go with a ball bearing GT series turbo....you will never go back. i'd imagine with the 35r you could make a safe 300+whp on stock internals with less or around 10psi
