H22 build. Question with NA tuning theory & where to do research.
Before I get into the specs of my friend's motor I'm going to ask what kind of things you guys shoot for when tuning NA? Biggest on my mind is AFRs. Do you try to tune 14.7 all the way through full throttle? Lean it out more? Richen it for particular areas?
Is Crome Pro an alright program to do some descent tuning on an NA motor?
I'm a FI guy, so I'm new to NA tuning theories. Are there any good sites in particular that are good for tuning information? (I searched on here, but didn't find anything pertaining to what I really want to know.)
On to the setup:
H22 Benson sleeved block, 89mm bore.
Arias 11:1 (or similar CR, will find out this weekend).
Eagle H-Beam rods (I think he should use the I-Beams because they're lighter).
Skunk2 Stage 1 cams.
Skunk2 valvetrain.
I/H/E.
Don't know what size injectors to use yet.
As far as I can remember that's about it.
He wants to take the car into the 12s and I told him that I think that with this setup and a conservative (if it exists in the NA world) tune should easily put him into the 12s.
This will probably be going into an Accord. I know there's no bench racing, but does this setup sound like it's capable of 12s as-is?
Thank you
-Nick, the FI guy.

I highy doubt you have enough power with that compression to run an accord into the 12's. Might want to try more cam and displacement. Unless you plan to cut and strip the **** out of that TANK. We will see I guess huh? GGGOOODDDDD luck with that mission.
even tho.. a 14.7:1 AFR is considered PERFECT in the tuning world.. you rarely ever see any dyno graphs or tuning sessions that have come close to consistant 14.7 values.. and that is the case for both FI and NA applications.. ive seen some serious NA setups within steady 11.5-8 - 12.5-8 : 1 AFR's
and ive seen some closer to 13's consistantly.. but very rarely do you see anything close to the "perfect" AFR.. only around IDLE should the mixture remain fairly lean....
as for injectors.. the stock h22a injectors should be fine.. (as long as the motor is a 92-96) which will have the 345cc's although i would get them flow checked to be sure..
possible spots to richen the mixture is obviously the Vtec X-over point.. where it is common sense that more fuel is needed when the engine is switching to much more aggressive cam profiles.. this takes alot of trial and error to flatten out the AFR for the Vtec switch and require a fair bit of tuning to get it right...
i will be running a abit more aggressive h22a setup in my own Accord.. with approx. 11.5-11.7:1 C/R and Rocket H22x Cams..
with all my other goodies and a good tune.. im HOPING for 220-230whpish.. and im only making an educated guess.. that i will be close to high 13's at the best.. 230whp in a civic is easy easy mid 12's.. 230whp in an Accord that is 1000lbs heavier than any civic will not come near that even with slicks.. the power/weight ratio is on the other end of the spectrum
your friend has high hopes.. but he needs a dose of reality and to be much more serious about his setup and car, if he has 12's in mind.. going with a Stage 1 cam and hoping for 12's is a pipe dream!
tell your friend to research around.. in the ALL-MOTOR forum there are afew threads called H22a Owners.. and Post your H22a Setups.. etc etc etc.. look over the modifications and hp/tq ratings.. then compare yours.. and you will see that his motor.. even with (I ENVY THIS) sleeves and forged pistons he is not looking into the POWER MAKER factors of N/A.. like Cams, Head-work (P&P) larger TB, Larger Intake Manifold/ITB's, a Dyno researched-developed/tested Header.. etc etc

Thanks a lot 4gen.
He does have a Skunk2 IM & I think a port matched throttle body. He has a 2nd head for P&P.
I basically found the entire setup for around 2k, but the guy kept handing him parts as he was about to take off, so he wound up with a good 3-4k worth of parts.
I had no idea NA cars usually ran so rich. Even in my boosted D16 I don't richen up to 11.5s until about 10psi.
