Default Best method to clean the outside of the intake manifold?

I've tried scrubbing it with a toothbrush and detergent, but it doesn't seem to be any better. I upped the coarseness of the brush and well, it scratched up a bit of it

Any recommended solutions for brightening it up?

Try lacquer (sp?) thinner if NOTHING else works. Stuff is strong.

Well, it's not too terribly dirty, just not as shiny. I'll try the cheaper methods first. Thanks all.
