93 ls t-belt tensioner problems
can anyone explain how this thing works? i've tried setting it but this thing makes no sense at all to me.. i got my belt on and car runs good but the belt has to much slack on the long side, like almost an inch and a half id say, and the belt doesnt spin nice and even while running, when i 1st started it it was making a slaping sound im almost positive was the belt, then it stopped after like 5sec and the car ran nice and quiet. but still loose.
either i set it wrong, or its bad. not sure how to tell if its bad so..

Did you make sure that the hole on the right side of the tensioner is on the little post that sticks out of the side of the engine? Is everything at TDC (look down the side of the engine and you should see a white mark on the crank pulley and a little arrow on the side of the tbelt cover - they should be lined up when your cams are at TDC). My guess is that you either tightened the tensioner too much when you put it on, so that the slack didn't get adjusted when you turned it 3 times, etc, or the tensioner is not on that little post, and is moving around freely, which doesn't allow the belt to tighten.
you have to make sure that the tensioner is slightly loose (the bolt is not torqued down yet), if you look at the side of the tensioner, it has alot of room where the bolt will move up and down based on the tension of the belt, so it is basically self-adjusting. If it is not on correctly (post hooked up on the right, spring on the left), or it is tightened too much, it won't allow the tensioner to do it's job, and you end up with a too loose or too tight t-belt.
thanks man, thinki got it, i just loosened it up and turned the crank a little then it was tight so i tightend the bolt. the belt still flapps a little on the long side while idling, but its pretty tight and rolls smooth when i twist the throttle a little
