stripped shocks
i was tryin to remove the bolt off the top of the shocks so i can change the stock springs to lowering springs but in the process the part where you put in the allen key rounded out. is there any way to be able to get it off still and still be useable would a shop be able to do this? this is the rear ones by the way TIA
If you want to still use the shocks, you can grab the shaft with a wrench; but you have to be careful and wrap a cloth or something around it so that you don't knick or scratch it.
Those rubber things that you use to get the lids off jars (or dish gloves) work pretty well. They give you grip, and the rubber does a good job of protecting the shaft.

well, here's what i did.....i dont have access to air tools, and i was trying to get my drivers side rear shock bolt off and for the life of me i couldnt get it loose and so i was like well....screw it...i went to a car dealership and went around to the back to service and asked if they could hit it with an impact wrench just to loosen them up, and with an impact wrench, it came loose, they didnt have a hex key in the end or anyhting and the impact took it right off.......impact tools are your friend!
i like the idea of impact tools someone mentioned that to me earlier. so i could just take it to a shop b/c i dont have access to those how much you think they'll charge it should be a lot right becuase they are just going to loosen it for me i'll swap it myself
I bet you could get some one to do it for free to just take a nut off.... i did however have access to air tools when i did min and soaked it with PB blaster spray. finally broke one side loose...took forever though.

i dont think u understand what i'm sayin
i dont mean to take the shocks off the lca i mean the top part of the shock that you have to remove in order to take off the springs itsself
wouldn't vice grips hurt the threading of the shaft?

same thing happened to me.. just took it to the shop.. they put it in a spring compressor and then used an impact gun and the nut came right off...
did another swap and it happened again.. when to a friends house and used an impact gun without the spring compressor (very dangerous... we all knew what would happen) and when the nut came off it shot the spring across the garage...
dont use a vice grip on the shocks piston.. those need to be smooth... take it to a shop or if you must use a vice grip, wrap something around it

Did you read my post? Grab the shaft in the area where the spring is and use something to protect the shaft if you don't have access to impact tools.

No, actually they're shocks. The 2001+ Civics have a McPhearson strut suspension in the front. 88-00s have a coilover shock type suspension.
