Default V-TEC not engaging!!!

Okay, so I just finished doing a compression check on my car, thought everything was fine, it wasn't. I noticed that the check engine light came on when I started it up, thought to myself, hmmm... that's strange. Then I went and took it for a ride and noticed the V-TEC will not engage at all!!!!!! I reved it high and got nothing! What the hell is going on!?!?!

there is a blue plug under the dash on the passenger side. if you use a wire to jump it you car read the code by turning the key on and counting how many times the check engine light flashes. if you count the flashes i will tell you what the code is. because the list is too long to type right now.

edit: you can use a paper clip to jump it.

Also, my car has been blowing smoke out the back like no other. Straight laying down a cloud. Smells like oil. Checked the compression today and it was fine. What is causing the problem? And if I throw a CEL, will that stop my V-tec from engaging???

could be a problem with the vtec solenoid or pressure switch. code P1259 (22 blinks) is a vtec system malfunction. i would say check the code.

cel = no vtec
^ for the most part... only 2 or 3 codes will still allow vtec to crack

that cloud is prolly carbon form un-burnt fuel

now my guess is code 3 or 7, which would be map or tps

oh btw this is how u read the codes

1 long blink = a double digit #

like ---,- = code 11
---,---,-,- = 22
-,-,- code 3

21= vtec pressure,
1.) the switch may have gone bad, or wiring may have come undone
2.) u maybe losing oil pressure< bad oil pump 3.) buildup and grime or rod bearing have cloged the screen in your vtec solenoid housing.
4.) your using a heavy weight oil like 50w

if its obd1 it is throwing the "Variable Valve Timing and Valve Lift Solenoid". corrective action "check vtec solenoid" and there is no code 21 for obd2

code 22 is the pressure switch.

im not sure how to check the solenoid itself. but i would just check to make sure the wire is intact. test continuity from that to the pin on the ecu.

solenoids dont ever really go bad but the pressure switches do

oil pump failure is the second most likely factor

yes there is a code 21 for odb2 and obd 1

if u feel the need to test the solenoid fell free, just disconnect the wire and unbolt the 3 screw on top of the solenoid housing and jump the wire to ur + battery terminal it should click

but like i said these very very rarely fail

Good info, but I'm lost. Where is the solenoid located? How much is this going to cost me? How long can I drive the car like this? And how did this happen from checking the compression?

its probably not related to ur compression check, unless u knocked a wire loose

did u unplug ur dizzy when u did the test b/s u should have b/c u could have burnt out ur icm in the dizzy

was it a swapped car? b/c there is more of a chance for unorigninal wiring to be knocked around

the solenoid is located behind ur dizzy on the left hand side of the motor

idk how much its gonna cost

cheap if its wiring

but the pressure switch is about 70-100 brand new form honda if thats the problem

if its ur oil pump well thats not fun and its over 600 after new t-belt and pump and labor

your motor will be perfectly fine u can drive it everyday like this just WATCH your oil pressure light.

be extra careful if this is an ls/vtec b/c they may not have upgraded to the gsr oil pump
