Cannot lay sub flat or upside down? How true is this? More importantly, how relevant?
I've heard from a few older car audio guys that it's very bad to suspend your sub from the basket. For example, having your sub sit in a false floor and facing directly up or facing directly down. Instead, your sub should be mounted up and down, perpendicular to the floor. The reasoning being that your sub will stretch out and sink out if it's magnetic field (or something like that!).
On the other hand, I've heard that speakers are much better made than they are even 10 years ago, and it's no longer a relevant concern.
How true is this? I want to mount a sub underneath the dashboard of my '83 Civic so I can preserve cargo space, and the only way to do it is to have the sub facing towards the floor.
I don't even want to start the project if down the line the sub is going to start sounding like crap.
I'd like your opinions please!

it has more to do with the weight of the sub's cone and the effect on the suspension. With today's subs, I wouldn't worry about it, but there's an equation you can find to determine if you sub is ok to be used facing down.
I'd agree that this is more of an oldschool thing
