The Terribly Mysterious A/C Pulley Bracket Broken Bolt
About this time last year, I was driving along and suddenly heard a very strange noise coming from the engine bay. I opened it up to find the A/C Belt Tensioner Pulley and the small bracket it's attached to resting on the power steering belt. Somehow the bolt that holds the A/C Belt Tensioner Pulley/Bracket to the A/C Compressor bracket broke right off. I had more money than time last year so I had a shop yank it apart and remove the broken bolt...replaced it with a new OEM bolt, and all was good. Well, a few weeks ago, the same freaking thing happened.
Questions:
1. Has this happened to anyone else?
2. Any ideas why this rather beefy bolt is shearing off? I can't see how there could be that much torque on it to make it snap. I did notice that the A/C compressor bracket to which the pulley is attached is also attached to the driver side engine mount....this mount is not in the greatest shape....possibly related?
3. Since I'm going to fix it myself this time, what are the chances I can get the A/C compressor bracket out without having to actually remove the compressor from the car and evac the system (so I can remove the broken bolt)? I'd like to just move the compressor out of the way to get to the compressor bracket but it looks awfully tight.
Anyway, all ideas, thoughts, or suggestions are appreciated
Cliff Notes: The bolt that holds the A/C Tensioner Pulley/Bracket to the A/C compressor bracket has broken twice in one year...WHY? Also - can the compressor bracket be removed to get at broken bolt without having to removed compressor and evac system???

You mean the harmonic damper in the pulley itself? I'm thinking more that it's the fact that the engine mount that the AC bracket it attached to is going bad and allowing it to move around too much.
Good thinking on the belts in general though... I'm pretty good at getting them to the proper tightness, but I will be extra careful
