GSR Swap on eBay - this one is odd...
So here's how it goes. I bought a 95' GSR full swap with type-r clutch on eBay.
I got to this persons house and the motor is on the floor of this guys garage on the side of this guys house. I knew already the oil pan would be scratched up. No big deal for me so far... I also then noticed there is no power steering pump on the motor. I told the guy, this is a full swap which means I want the power steering pump. He gives it to me no questions asked. We load it into my truck and haul it away for the 3 hour drive home. I get home get it off the truck and get it onto a wooden dolly.
First thing I do is pull the plugs and inspect them. In the process I find that two of them are sooooo hard to get out. I feared the worst, stripped spark plug holes. But luckily it doesn't appear to have pulled any threads out. Whew... Move onto my next thing. I remove the valve cover to repaint it since the old paint was really worn. I noticed P61 etched on the bottom of the valve cover, I chuckle and know that it's from an older GSR. No big deal, repainting.
Next I remove the transmission and find out it has a broken throw out bearing. That would have been nice to find out after getting the motor in the car. I also noticed that the clutch fork (thing that pushes on the pressure plate says (P80) on it. Not sure what thats off of but I don't care. Note that the tranny doesn't have a VIN number on it rather just the S80 Sticker. I'm not sure if all years had the VIN numbers on the tranny. Let me know...
Next a friend and I get the motor up on the engine stand that I have. I reinstall my painted valve cover and flip the motor over and "damn that oil pan is really bent up." I also notice that I need a new oil pickup. Real bent up. Don't really care, its a project. Now this next part is what really scared me. Take a look at the pictures and tell me whats wrong...

In case you haven't noticed what's odd about this pictures, take a closer look at the rods and notice that P72 is not in the same direction throughout the pictures. One is out of sequence. With that conclusion, so is the piston. The piston is offset, correct. Because 2 and 3 are definiately not installed the same way. Here's my question, could a motor with the pistons installed like this actually run? Would it run safely? Would it throw a rod had I actually started this up and ran it to redline?
I also have pictures of the bearings and correct me if I'm wrong but they look like ***. Three of the five main bearings have scratches dug into them. Also take note at the center bearing as it looks like the motor was indeed run like this... I'm scared to look at the rod bearings. Also, how can you tell if a motor has spun a bearing before? Or has a spun bearing?

If the rod/piston was installed backward, the valve reliefs in the pistons would be on the wrong side possibly damaging the valves and piston. Any chance he just bolted the rod cap on backwards?
I was gonna say that you were missing the main caps, lol.
Good luck with the build, and I would call the guy and ask what was up with the engine and that you think there will probably be valve/piston damage due to the improper installation. Also inform him about the tranny problem you stated. Tell him that if there is engine/tranny damage that you can't easily fix, you might have to seek a remedy. Good luck to you.

Yeah, I took the caps off first thing last night and they were definately on with the bearing "tangs" on both sides. I think at minimum once I get the head off the motor I should be able to more openly be able to tell what is going on. I honestly don't know how you could screw that up but whatever. Worst things have happened. I am a little concerned about the thrust washers. I have about 1/16 - 1/8 of crank endplay. Hopefully new thrust washers will fix that. We will see. When I crank the motor by hand I hear hissing noises. Definately something not sealing well... Hopefully its not a bent valve.

plus with fresh new parts you will always know how the parts have been maintained and treated

I also recommend this, I am doing the same thing right now because the previous owner of my car wasn't an honor roll student. So I am in the middle of rebuilding and re-wiring his fuckups. Good luck dude.

I really appreciate all the help. I found out the pressure plate (clutch release fork) is actually supposed to say P80 hah its the part number. Looks like I have some research to do before I go accusing people. Theres also a few things that say P61. The valve cover is indeed for that motor. The part number for the GSR valve cover is P61.
I did buy the motor planning to rebuild it so no big deal to me. It's getting Wiseco 8.9:1 Comp Pistons with Manley Rods. This thing will rip some *** once I drop it into a hatch. Now my stupid trial thing is up and now I have to wait a few days because I'm a "noob." Whatever... Thanks again and you shall hear from me again soon! Honda-Tech
