Spraying Fiberglass
Please only answer if you delt with fiberglass.. This is just a thought that I want your opionion on!!!
Well ive been working on a box setup for a friend. It is in a 2003 lancer. Well I was laying down the first layer of fiberglass and matt. His setup is a pretty big one so my hand got tired from putting down the glass. While letting the resin cure I was digging through a box when I came upon a old air-paint can and an idea came to me. If you would get say a gel coating gun. (Ex. lineX bed liners) or some kind of high viscosity paint gun do you think it would be possible to lay fiberglass down with it?
Im not talking about every layer. Just like the first before you put the matt down and the last few. The gun will give you a even layer then a brush will and it will also help get into tight places.
Only down side I see to this is if you wait to long it will harden and clog the gun. Again I just brought this up to see what you guys think. Im going to build just a small little test box to see the outcome of both the sprayed on fiberglass and the brushed on.
Comments and questions are welcomed.

i cant remember off the top of my head but some companys make fiberglass guns. They are in the high price range but they are worth it if you work with fiberglass alot. Think about if you had to make a boat by hand laying the fiberglass. They do make you just have to do a little research.
they need to be both high viscosity guns AND high velocity guns, so as to penetrate the fiberglass appropriately.
and yes, there are companies that have made these before, but they are largely industrial in nature and i have never seen one for sale.

What your talking about is spraying a gelcoat into a mold and then doing the fiber-glassing, it;s how they get the smooth surface on the hull of a fiberglass boat, then a layer of matt is laid, then we use a "chop gun" to spray fiberglass and resin on and then the last layer is also a gel type coat that is sprayed on with a spray gun.

Thanks guys. Well ive looked around before I started this thread and found some guns that are made for fillers and bondo(Marine App.) I mainly asked because when I do boxes after a while my hands start to hurt and its hard when some boxes where there is alot of tight spots. I thought with the gun it would make it easy to spray in those spots and you can lay down the last coats smooth so you dont have to sand as much. Thanks again guys!!!
true working with fiberglass isn't easy. The longer you work if fiberglass the more you understand and learn about what not to do next time. to make it a little bit easier next time. I dont think your alone everybody's hands hurt when fiberglassing sanding and painting. When they do hurt just keep telling yourself how good the final product is going to be.
Yeah I agree. I just say "I think I can" I can still work through the pain its not going to kill me. But hey if it helps out then its worth a shot. The thing is see it helping alot on is if you do more then one box at a time.
