Default RPM's climbing, but no GO

I just picked up for my wife a 92 accord EX with the auto tranny and when I accelerate, it doesn't move according to the rpms. If I put the shifter on a low gear, it accelerates normal then when i click it to the next gear, it shifts fine. But in D, it doesn't want to shift like that. Once rolling in D, the car does accelerate properly but it sucks culo when going from a stop light. What could be the cause of this?

thanks for the help in advanced

Sounds like the clutchpacks (I believe thats the term anyhow) are slipping in the tranny. As mentioned before, first check the fluid level. Also check to make sure the fluid is not burned or discolored.
