Default Pulled d16y8 head off, gasket looked odd...

It looks as if all the whole black layer of a fresh new gasket was missing on the removed gasket. When you guys pulled off your old gaskets, did it have the black sides still on the gasket?

mine was three layers or copper colored surfaces... the black surface was not there, but I saw traces of what could be considered the black layer.

EDIT: I believe the shop just used a light coat of copper spray.

But notice how the black layer is burned off where the sleeves sit...

i don't see copper spray, and a shop did it

EDIT: I'm thinking about a blockguard possibly, and file it down just enough so it fits in the block, without using force to get it in there... I doubt that would shift the sleeves doing that

I bet that it's just a mess of copperspray that you're looking at, didn't you say it looks coppery with some black? The stock gasket is black and steel colored, there's no copper in it anywhere. Can you post pics?

i'll post pics when i get back to mycar, which is 40 mins from where i live

you can see traces of copper stuff on the head and block, but it doesn't look like its reminants from a spray.

I'm 99.99% sure it's copperspray. There isn't any copper in the stock gasket.

Well that's a good point too I guess. Is it a three layer gasket? I guess we'll know more once we get some pics. So the shop bought the gasket, not you I take it?

I've had a few of my own and other D16 gaskets in the past looked at by some reputable engine builders. Can't say 100% that its the culprit, however its certainly not helping the situation.

And why do people use copper spray Anyways? Yes it's sticky, but one of the properties of cooper is to weap coolant...

I've had worse luck with copper spray then without so I don't use it anymore.

The little sleeves talking...

You sure that isn't a little rust, from water in the coolant hitting the tops of the sleeves?

Eh? Small traces of rust in a little coolant/oil look fairly bright orange.

Yes sir that's copper spray just like I thought. Notice the parts where the copper spray stayed completely intact where the gasket sticks out of the block?
