Default is a VSS required for a non vtec car to run right?

has anyone here had problems with their cars while not having a vss? or driving with a broken one and throwing a code? thanks

When my car was stock,
It constantly threw code #17 for the speed sensor
even though the speedometer worked.

The car ran fine,so I just removed the check engine bulb..

I had to eventually replace the instrument cluster to make
the code go away.

been throwing CEL 17(VSS) for 2+ years now. no problem : )

i think myn is the cluster too just never installed the new one... there is a burnt trace on the back. i think i followed it to the speedo. cant remember

Connection at back of cluster; [the two phillips heads]

lets not forget there are something that happen as a result of speed.

i know my cars alternator goes to 14v @ and above 45mph. back to 12.6v below 45mph.

When i did my swap it had a busted VSS and the car ripped still, no problems just no speedo and my cars milage never increase

But that really has nothing to do with the vehicles speedometer/VSS..
The alternators output is being increased/decressed by the engines r.p.m.

i just wish i knew why i am losaing power in the top end. it feels like it wants to go but something is holding it back
