B18C MOTOR SWAP TO 99 CIVIC MAJOR QUESTIONS
HEY I AM PLANNING TO DO A GSR SWAP AND I'M PICKING OUT THE J-SPEC ENGINE WITH LSD TRANNY. I WAS WONDERING ABOUT WIRING UP THE ENGINE HOW WOULD YOU DO THAT DO YOU HAVE TO CHANGE ANYTHING OR IS IT JUST PLUG AND PLAY. WHICH MOUNT WOULD FIT AND WHICH MOUNTS WOULD I HAVE TO PURCHASE? IF I GET A 94 GSR MOTOR WOULD IT BE OBD1 I DON'T WANT TO RUN INTO ANY WIRING PROBLEM I HEARD 96 UP GSR ARE OBD2. OBD1 VS OBD2 IS OBD2 THAT BAD? CAN ANYBODY HELP ME OUT..THANKS
ur in luck. i would buy at least a 96+ motor just for the fact it would b alot easier to hook up. ok, heres the scoop. u need a 99-00SI rear tranny mount, a 99-00 drivers side motor mount bracket. both items should cost around $100. to keep AC u will need a del sol DOHC AC bracket. use the 99 EX wire harness. u will NOT NEED TO CUT ANYTHING. u will have to reroute a few things but everything will plug in. find a 99-00 SI distributor. as far as the ECU goes, id buy a skunk2 converter harness and get a OBD1 GSR ECU. u will need to ad wires to the ECU for IAB. i repinned my 99 civic to 98 specs but most ppl dont have the skill nor the patience to do that. the exhaust mani will b too short, so either buy a header now or u will need to extend the exhaust approx 4-5inches.
ok sorry for got to tell you that i'm doing the swap into a 99 civic dx so would i have to go and find a ex wiring harness? And i see IAB all the time but still haven't figure out what that stands for. Just wondering why would people want to backward convert obd2 to obd1. isn't upgrade better. I've read that you can tune your car up better with obd1 so to backward convert do you just leave out the wires for the o2 sensors and all that obd2 stuff? thanks
i would like to do a clean swap can you give me some insight into repinning the 99 to 98 spec . i also have a helm manual on hand with wiring diagram but don't understand what the picture mean..any help would be appreciated before i buy the engine and start..i 'm preping myself before i take it to my friend's shop i'm not trusting anybody but me on my car thanks

do a search, i have answered this question at least a hundred times along with many other people. hondaatwsu gave some pretty good advice. you can run either the ex or si engine harness, but it has to be 99-00. get an ecu jumper for 99-00 obd2 to obd1. if you dont know what that is, do a search, you will find it. also check out http://hybrid.honda-perf.org/tech/6gtech.html disregard any of the wiring info if you have a 99. but as far as mounts and all that, it will tell you what you need to know.

IAB stands for Intake Air Bypass, its a vacuum assisted plate that when at about 5700RPM it swaps to a different intake runner. it helps with the bottom end torque but when at higher RPMs changes for better top end. the reason to switch to a OBD1 ECU is because u can rechip the ECU for better gains. plus since its a 99 spec car its got what some refer to as OBD2.5. just an upgraded version of 96-98s OBD2 original.
as far as repinning from 99 to 98 specs. heres what i did. get the ECU pinouts for both 99EX and in my case 98GSR. then i went to the local junkyard and found the 3 plugs that plug into the ECU from a wreck. i cut them off and took em home. then heres the fun part. u have to try to figure out how those pins come out of the plug. it took awhile but i finally figured it out. then i made a table 1st column had the pinouts of the 99 and the plug it came from (ie A,B, C), second column had the color code of the wire in that slot, third has the location of the pinout on the 98 ECU (A,B, D). then one by one i took out each pin and located it onto the 3 extra plugs i got off the wrecked car. after 2.5 hrs it was all done. an extra set of hands helps too. i found that out by repinning one of my friends cars, much faster. i got lucky and everything plugged back in and i fired up my car for the first time. drove around for a week on the GSR ECU w/stock EX motor in my car. ran much better and best of all, no check engine lights. if u have any more ?s just ask.
ok my budget dosn't permit me to do the swap i really want to do which is the b18c.But i found a b16a usdm from a 99 civic si in my price range. I think this is a straight forward swap into my 99 civic dx right? everything should be plug and play if the get the complete swap right...thanks

If you get the 99 Si swap make sure the wire harness and ecu is included. It is totally plug and play since the year is the same.
