Default New bike time

From now on I'm assuming every "rider" I see on the street has a bike that can spontaneously disassemble mid corner and kill me.

So I finally picked up a replacement for my 2005 R6 that got stolen last year.

It's taken me a long *** time and after I found a pretty good deal on a used 06' GSXR 600 I thought I was all set. The seller flaked on me and I was pretty pissed about the whole ordeal and having to start over. I hadn't looked at Craigslist in about 2 weeks because I thought I found my bike.

After reading back through about 500 ads I found one from my town for an 05 GSXR 600 with some crash damage. Asking $6100, I called up and found out it was actually a kid I went to high school with and he immediately knocked the price down to $5500 because one fairing needed to be replaced due to him dropping it on a curb. 3800 miles, fender eliminator, d&d pipe and some other stuff like fake carbon levers and bar ends.

Long story short the bike looked better then expected, the fairing is just rashed pretty deep but with no real holes and no cracks in it. The rest of the bodywork was pretty perfect.

Bought it without as much as a test ride and rode it home Saturday.

That's when I started to get worried.

-First off 3/4 of the clutch pull was free play. No shitting you here the thing was catching about 2 mm away from the bar. I almost stalled and fell over trying to pull away from his house.

-Throttle has about 15mm more play then it needs. Twist twist twist gas!

-D&D pipes suck even more when you're riding the bike then when you're next to one. It's a just bolt on can and the fuel map sucked with it on. It was loud, horribly uneven power and just sounded like ****. Ugh.

-This thing handled like ******* ****. No wobbles or veering to either side in a straight line but once you try and turn it in the whole thing goes to ****. Fawk.

-After some cursing and kicking I checked the tire pressure and the front was at 22lbs with the rear at 26 w00ps.

Took it for another ride better but the front is still jackhammering then upsetting the rear. Causing me to run very very wide and pucker my ******* a bit.

Ummm, check the rebound and compression.

-One fork was half a turn away from full soft on both and the other was half a turn away from full hard.

No wonder the kid sold the bike, it was a ******* death trap.

The tires were also squared off which didn't help out with the whole turning thing.

I spent about 6 hours today checking everything over on it and cleaning it. I think he used tar for chain wax because it was everywhere and almost impossible to get off. I took off the D&D and put the stock can back on(thank god he still had it), adjusted everything back to stock. It runs much better with the stock can on and I'm no longer scared for my life when I try and turn it in except for the noticeable reluctance form the tires to get over on the edge. I have some qualifiers I'm mounting tomorrow so hopefully that should take care of all the problems.

I was seriously scared that something on the bike was fucked up beyond repair after the first ride. I had absolutely no idea a person could let their bike get into such bad shape because they are clueless on how to fix it or just from lack of care. Honestly the best way to describe the bike was flat out dangerous.

I'll get some pics up tomorrow but I think it was a steal for 5500 because after a days worth of tinkering it feels perfect.

Now it's time to start turning it into a track *****

Basically.

I'm going to ride it on the street for a few weeks to get used to it then keep the stock plastics around just in case I ever feel the need to swap and ride on the street. Riding with friends, taking a girl for a ride to get in her pants etc.

I got fire & theft insurance for it so bucking up a few extra dollars a year to get liability and plates for it wasn't a hard choice.

I was looking for a track only bike but 5500 for a mint bike with some cosmetic plastics damage seemed perfect.

Sounds like you bought a used bike for a good deal from somebody that didn't know what to do with it...fixed it the correct way...and now will proceed to have fun....

Thank God you are an experienced rider and knew what to tweak to make it worth riding. Good find.
