This is the second time this has happend to me at an hpde. I run in a run group and the car shifts fine no grinds no anything i get back to the pit and i do not have reverse any more its like its not even there in the trans?
The last time i got ready to pull the trans and suddenly it works again? and works great for the last month. I go back out to the track this weekend and after the first group of run i no longer have reverse again? Any one have any ideas????
Very strange i have lost many gears in many diffrent trans but never revers and they have never fixed themselves....

So you should have known better than to keep driving it. Obviously something is wrong with the gearbox. Continuing to drive it will only make the problem worse and potentially kill other components. I would be looking towards the 5th/reverse pack or the reverse idler, possibly even the shift piece and change holder, etc. Not much to diagnose with the tranny all sealed up and still in the car.

I did not have the time to swap trans for the weekend the vette needed a butt load of work before the nasa event this last weekend and if it blew i have a spare. Its just a new one for me.

this has happend to me but only when i first got my swap. I took it to a trans. place and they were going to look at it but said something was just loose(i forget what it was now) but i wasnt too suprised b.c. my swap was put in very quickly so some stuff was looked over at first but now fixed.

the reverse gear is really close to the mainshaft. If something was
wrong you would hear expensive noises I bet.
Maybe your reverse linkage isn't working? So you can't move the
reverse into position.

I am sure its the damn detent ball and spring " the bumps in the pic" on the reversechange lever since i do not hear the really bad noises.. I have seen them fail before.
The revers gear idler shaft doesnt have a ball & spring detent deal, only the two shift forks. The reverse shaft is held in by a 10mm bolt on the other side of the trans case.
Trust me when i say it does. there is a thin spring on the flip side of that lever with a chrome ball that is the detent " in the pic you can see the two dents that it will sit in.
I had one in my race trans that would not go into reverse before and the ball had lost a small amount of chrome and would not budge. It sucks to have to pull the trans out for a $28 part.
