how do you know when its time for a new sub?
I have a 12" kickersolobaric s12c ive had for a few years now, but i bought it used, It still hits hard no problems. My question is what happens to a sub when it gets too old?
Symptom: not playing as loud as it used to
-surround/spider get stiff and restrict movement of the cone.
-resistance of the voice coil increases (less power going to the driver).
Symptom: scraping sound
-When the spider/surround deteriorate, the voice coil alignment will get screwed up.
-The glue might release, screwing up the alignment of the voice coil in the gap.
-The wires of the voice coil might come off the former.
Symptom: not playing at all
-fried voice coil.
-broken wires somewhere on the sub.

Well if it still hits hard, then it may be old but thats all.
All speakers are about the same, and they get "old" in the same places, and a lot of things have to do with what gets "old", when. Everything from how they are installed to how they are powered to how they are played will have an effect on them.
The number one thing that goes wrong with most speakers is the VC, they can be burnt, from misuse, [putting too much power to them (watts) or driving them with an underpowered amp that is being driven into clipping for long periods of time, The VC can also become "delaminated", [also from excessive heat from overpowering or under-powering] The VC can be misaligned, [improper mounting of speaker] it will rub the walls of the VC gap.
The next most common is just plain wear and tear, on the surround, [outside edge of speaker, glued to the cone and the speaker basket] kind of like a "hinge", the material that it's make of can/will be effected by movement, humidity, [or lack of] and sunlight, [UV] and physical damage.
And less common is the spider, [connected to base of cone and speaker basket] it is also susceptible to wear and tear from movement and it's material can be effected by the environment around it.
Think of a speaker as a motor, if you take real good care of it it will last for a long time, but, eventually it will wear out.
You do not have a problem with a speaker until you hear things that should not be there, or stop hearing things that should be there.
