Replace tapered roller bearing with ball bearing for LSD install?
I've seen quite a few topics here in which people have swapped out the tapered roller bearings (found on GS-R differentials) for standard ball bearings (found on almost everything else). I have an ITR LSD that the previous owner ran in a GS-R transmission and, as such, it has brand new tapered roller bearings on it.
What is the benefit of switching to the standard ball bearings? Is it the ease of adjusting clearances with shims versus preload? I plan to put this ITR LSD in my GS-R trans this summer and want to know what I'm getting into. Is there an outer race that the tapered roller bearings ride on in the trans case that can simply be removed should I decide to go with standard ball bearings? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes.
i actually istalled an itr lsd in my gsr tranny couple of months ago. the itr lsd had tapered roller bearings on it my gsr had sealed ball bearings. from my understanding all newer model tranny's have the sealed units mine being a 2000 and the itr unkown (97+). i simply pressed my sealed bearings on the itr differential. this eliminated needing to measure preload, however you do still have to measure diff to case clearance and use the correct shims. overall this was a fairly simple upgrade considering i have never plulled a tranny apart before, just be cautious when disassembleing to be sure everything goes back together the same.
