92 Civic (EG) swap from power to manual steering.
This has been beaten to death. But here is a point I don't think I have ever heard anyone mention before. I recently swapped the power steering rack out of my 92 Civic H/B (EG) and installed a new, manualrack from a 92 Civic CX.
Note: The manual rack itself is 10 lbs lighter than the power steering rack.
The rack seemed to install pretty easily. One SLIGHT difference...OK, not so slight. The portion of the engine subframe that the rack attaches to on the passenger side is different between manual and power racked cars, because of the larger diameter of the rack itself. Where the passenger side of the rack is bolted to the beam, the beam from the power racked car is dished at that spot. The beam from the car with the manual rack is flat in that spot. And there is no proper way to get it to sit properly, unless you use some huge ungodly bushing (and since I just bought Mugen rack bushings, I wasn't about to ghetto something together)
To make a long story short. To do it proper, you will need the rack PLUS the main engine cradle (50200-SR3-L00). And the cradle runs about $900 list, thank god I work for the dealer
So, if you want to install the Quaife R&P with a Honda rack, you will also have to change the main engine cradle.
As a side note, feels a LOT better than the looped P/S rack that I had before. And if I feel the turns lock-lock suffered too much, I will just install the Quaife stuff, now that the car is already properly converted to manual steering.
Want to make a small fortune racing? Start with a big one......

I plan to ditch my manual rack for a looped integra rack. I find my ratio far to long, Its obnoxious how much I have to turn to get any response, and thats for street driving. When I have this on track, I will need way to much steering input to get results.s Since the intgra rack has the SAME ratio as the quaife stuff, I figure its just cheaper to buy an integra rack, I didn't realize I would come across this issue, I have a 95 hatch. Maybe I could find someone that wants my manual rack, and we could just trade stuff.
Thats strange; I put the Civic manual rack in my DC and had no such problems.
Also, regarding the above post, I am running a Momo Corse with the rack and don't find the ratio all that bad.
How much is a new rack from the dealer?

Maybe I'm just spoiled by other racks. I have tracked a GSR, and the rack is much tighter and quicker. Also, my 951 has a fairly quick rack. The civic has, by far, the longest, laziest rack I have experienced ion the cars I have gotten to know well.

Wait till you try driving a manual racked 6th gen Civic.... when you turn the wheel.... it's almost as if the car is thinking..."ok...maybe left.......mrmmm.....now"
I'm more interested in how to gut the powersteering rack like some of the miata guys do.... I'll do an experiment in a couple of months and see if I end up destroying something and proclaiming it a spectacular waste of time instead.

Are you sure? The rack goes in, but it is just not secured properly.
I think the new manual rack cost me $200 or so (not sure anymore, was a while ago)

Yes, I used the Energy Suspension steering rack bushing for the Civic when i mounted it.
I aim on replacing the rack soon so I will do a quick write up then.

This man speaks the truth. I put a '97 CX rack in my '99 Si. It was livable. Driving my 92 CX now, holy crap.

I assume the 92 CX is the same as my 95 CX. I'll get my SOHC vtec engine in there this summer... Once thats in, I get to mess with suspension, and the rack and all that stuff. (usually its supesnion first, but you cannot track a car with this rediculous engine)

Tell that to the entire Honda Challenge H5 and SCCA ITC field.

Their running the 8v B8 motor? Seems like thats kinda pointless. No offence, but if I seriously can't see enjoying the track with such an unmotivated engine. The tranny is the worst. I don't think the H5 guys are running the b15b8, it should be the B7's right? thats another 30hp.
I'm doing something stupid, and building a D16Z6/Y8. I know I'll be lucky to see 150 hp, but I will still enjoy the NA characteristics, the pleasure of the build, and with 2100 pounds, thats not bad.

How do you think driving a D15B2 with a 4-speed tranny would be? Pretty boring right?
You should go for a ride in an ITC car one time and hang on and see what momentum cars are all about. If you are just throwing something together for a track car, cool, have fun.
If you are aiming for a class, you may want to rethink.

I know that these cars are momentum cars. (going into a corner when the driver didn't brake raises a few hairs) But I can tell you that I can't even get my car up to enough speed to be able to drive any track with any sort of elevation change.
I'm definetly not looking to class, its really a daily driver, that will see track time when the supposed track ***** porsche doesn't work, which I suspect may be more often then I will want to admit. I do enjoy Honda's on track, so if nothing else, I'll have a choice. I have to admit, the 951 is being over built for my abilities.

Yes, and the Energy Suspension rack bushing has one flat side on it? It's profile is a "D" shape? Look at where it mounts on the car, there are no flat spots for the bushing to rest against, it is a completely round opening. You are putting a square peg in a round hole.
I hope this isn't a 92 model year only thing......
