Default does not rev abov 3k?

I was test driving my friend's ef sedan i will be buying from him, but as soon as you hit 3k rpms, the tach jumps all over the place and the car bogs down. Im thinking it's the distributor, but i just wanted some other opinions.
thanks

i dont think it is compression, it runs strong up until 3k when the needle just starts to jump around and the car just bogs

is the check engine light on??

pull the codes from the ecu (lift carpet on pass side, turn key to ON (dont start) and count the flashes.

you will get 1 initial "on" flash, then count the flashes after that, then it will pause and start over.

3k rev limit = limp mode, could be a number of things, most likely the TDC sensor in the dist.

check the rotor button. Sometimes the screw falls out causing the timming to be wacked out.
