I did the search and could not find a similar question asked before.

Here's the problem, when I have approximately a quarter ( and less ) of a tank of gas left it takes almost 2 secs to start the car. When the tank is full it starts momentarily. It started to happen just recently and it doesn't matter if it is hot or cold outside. Did anyone encounter something like this before?

 

fuel pump could be dying... i don't know for sure, but with my old vw corrado (two pump system) when it started to happen, i was like whatevers, but 3 weeks later the pumps died (pump and pre-pump in the design) and my mechanic told me that was a warning sign. but that's vws, it might just be the same with Honda.

 

That's what I have heard also. Could dirty fuel filter be the problem besides that?

This is normal. Every Honda I have ever owned and/or driven has exhibited this behavior. I personally don't recommend running less than 1/4 tank of fuel for a lot of reasons, including fuel pump longevity (the fuel cools the pump), starvation issues, and condensation - it's not THAT big of a deal though.

Interestingly, I've answered this question several times here in the past; I'm surprised that a search didn't turn anything up.

 

Well i tried different queries. Longer starting time, longer cranking, low fuel start, etc. Back to question though, as i said it did not happen before, and i've driven with less than 1/4 tank many times prior to that. Now this is a regular occurrence..

The car: 99 civic lx 4dr ( stock engine )

I'll be replacing my fuel filter next week, maybe that'll help since from the looks of it, the previous owner never touched it…

guys/ girls c'mon I'm out of ideas here, i don't want and can not afford to start replacing all the parts in the car to get that stupid problem fixed. This is a cry for help!!!!!!

I don't think it is.. As i said it started to happen just recently, and I've driven with less than 1/4 of tank before.

 

normal.... though, mine only takes a long time to start, if i let it sit for hours on a low tank. If i'm driving and it goes low, stop for a bit, it'll fire up no issues, guessing its something with pressure. Maybe it slowly builds down over time, so the first time you try and start it up after letting it sit for hours, its gotta build up that pressure. Either way, it does it on my two hondas, and my friends hondas too... so normal it is

 

Alrighty then. I guess I over panicked just trying to get my car in the decent shape, it deserves it

 

could it a batt or alt prom?

 

mine does this as well when im at a 1/4 or less, My batt is getting weak so that may be the prob but this has been happening for a while. I wouldnt worry, just keep ur gas up!

 

check ur starter!!!!

 

I agree with the 5+ other people that said it is normal.

Next time you start up, try turning your key to ACC II before you turn it to the third one to start the engine. Leave it on the second stage until the CEL light goes off (~2secs.), then start the engine from that point. While the CEL is on in ACII, you should hear what I have been told is the fuel pump priming, and it should eliminate this common occurence.

 

normall!!!! just learn to live with it, its a civic. i knew it was normall because everyone with i civic i know has the same story.
