Default help with electrical problem!

today i was driving my 01 prelude, playing music pretty loudly (alpine deck, no external amp), and i went to plug in my cell phone charger into the cigarette lighter jack. As soon as I plugged it in, the radio shut off, and nothing was working. Deck, cigarette lighter, dome light... everything. After a while, the deck slowly powered back on, but still whenever I try to plug in anything into the cigarette lighter jack or turn on the dome light, the deck loses power and turns off. After a while, the deck will slowly power back on again.

I'm a n00b to any electrical stuff, so can anyone help me out as to what went wrong, and how I need to go about fixing it? I'm guessing I blew a fuse somewhere, but is it normal for the deck to come back after its been off for a while if a fuse is blown? HELP!! THANKS

wowzers. Check your grounds. One of them may not be on tight/weak and isn't properly distributing current through the rest of your car when you switch on another electrical device. I'd also take a multimeter to make sure your battery is giving off the right voltage.

i agree to check voltage at the head unit and at the battery. also if a fuse blows it will not suddenly work again so that is not it.

When you say check the grounds, are you talking about the grounding wire for the deck? or something else? if not the deck, where would i look for this?

thanks for the help

Checked the fusebox earlier, and the fuse for "Interior Lights" was burnt out. Replaced that, and everythings working fine now. The fuse for Stereo/Clock was fine. Thanks for the help anyway!

yeah I was about to say, a different fuse blowing might change the current draw or a fuse may blow half-*** and still allow a little current to get through.

If you have a helms, there's a diagram which basically lays out all the grounds for your car. Each of them are for a different bunch of electrical units throughout your car. First and formost I'd check the main battery ground which should be bolted down sort of to the far left of where your hood latch is on the front trim. You'll see it.

Look at it this way, say your battery is giving off good voltage, but there is a bad ground somewhere, that means it's breaking or giving off really inconcistent currents throughout the rest of your chassis which can cause other electrical devices to fluctuate with surges of current going up and down.

I skimmed througth the thread a little, but to be honest electrical stuff just gives me a headache... sooo... I think this link might* help you.

http://www.installdr.com/Harnesses/HA-Wiring.pdf

I got it from an old thread of mine where I had electrical problems:
