electrical/wiring issue?
So I have a weird problem. My radio only works when my dome light is set in the middle(note: there are 3 settings), <U>and</U> when the passenger door is closed.
Otherwise, it shuts off and turns on again only when those ^^ conditions are present. Also, the dome light does not work at all.
Series of events that lead to this: car had system, we uninstalled, re-wired stock speakers to radio (?-I myself am not sure since I didn't do it, my friend did.), radio stopped working/dome light/cig. lighter, replaced "interior light" fuse(tonight), then... the weird problem happened!
Any ideas? Im confused. And Id really like to be able to listen to my radio, allow my passenger to get out, AND have my dome light on all at the same time!
TIA

That's a new on on me, and I have been doing this a long time, it's deff. a wiring issue, and probably a grounding problem, as the most common symptom of a grounding problem, is one seemingly unrelated thing having an affect on another, depending on car, they don't share any circuits, except maybe the constant power, and ground of coarse.
I would pull the HU and check the wiring, here is a pin out and color code http://www.installdr.com/Harnesses/HA-Wiring.pdf the only one not there is the red/black, "Dash Light Dimmer Wire", the constant power, [back up power] fuse is in the engine bay fuse box, [probably a 7.5A].

When a door is open, it'll show negative through it's circuit. But in the case of a dome light set to 'door', it'll throw positive to the light when the door is ajar.
Two possibilities, whenever your door is opened (grounded pin switch), it's also shorting either your ACC or constant +12V wire leading to your radio.
Or.. there's a short from your domelight throwing +12V to your GND wire on the radio so it shorts out whenever the light is supposed to come on.
Should be pretty simple to fix.

</TD></TR></TABLE> Not exactly, the dome light always has 12V+ on it, [white/red wire] fused in the in-car or engine bay fuse box, [depending on year or model] it is a constant, [hot all the time] circuit, the switch at the dome light connects the neg. side of the bulb to nothing, [off] to the door pins, [on when a door is open] or ground, [on] so when set to 'door', and door is "ajar" the door pin will supply a ground to the light that already has 12V+.

I think what he meant to say is the ground side is + when there is no load. Apply a stereo to that wire and your light will flash as the current passes through the bulb.

Definetly something wrong with the wiring.

The guy who wired your radio is a genius. If someone asked me to wire a radio in that manner, I'd have a hard time trying to figure it out.

Also how would he have done that, [wire into the pin switch wire] you would really have to go out of your way to do that.
Lets hope he re-posts after he has pulled the HU and checked the wiring.

Hey guys Im just now reading all of this- we just got our power back on this morning, we lost it on Monday at 6 am due to hurricane wilma.
anyway it was not me who wired anything... i wouldnt know how to to save my life. it was a friend of mine... so ill relay all these posts to him or someone else who can help me. I shoulda known better than to let him do it, he owns a VW
