Default 2.7L RPM at Highway Speed

****** Warning NOOB Question ******

I am new to all this Honda stuff. I just got a 97 Accord LX V6, and I noticed at 70mph the engine turns at approx 3000rpm. Is this the normal rpm at that speed for a stock LX V6? The car seems just fine at that rpm but is seems a little high strung from the other cars I have at that speed.

your torque converter may not be locking up 3k is excessively high for a V6. The I4 does not even turnk 3K at 70.... Get your trans checked out.

Thanks for the Quick Answer.

My first task for this car is new front brakes and rotors.

What were the engineers thinking when they put the hub in front of the rotor!!!!!!

I've seen a very nice post on this site about rotor replacement. I'll use it as my guide.

Then I need to replace the timing belt since it has 146k on it.

Or should I do the timing belt first ???

so, let me get this straight....the V6 is geared LOWER than the I4?

I have a 94 accord I4 and it turns 2700 at 70mph 3K gets you 75 easily

my '98 2300 gets you 70 and 3K gets you 95mph...

Something isn't right because with it's lower gearing, it should be FASTER on the accelleration than the I4 EX dispite it's added heft........

i dont think that is right, my I4 doesnt turn to 3k until 80 mph

the v6 should be lower than the i4

lol well drove it last nite home on the highway and was thinking about the question you had and at 70 i was at 3k and everything was fine

if you look at hondas that are more than 4 cylinders and without vtec they are goin to be higher in the rpm category than one that does have vtec

its just an improvement overall they have made in the years after ours.....the new hondas rev really low at high speeds but thats to save gas, ours isnt exactly the most fuel efficient motor out there

This is true, I have a 7th gen 4cyl auto, I rev 2k at 62, and I don't get to 3k until 90. It's annoying, because if you're at 60-65ish and trying to make a highway "pass" or merge into faster traffic, you've got to step on the pedal (even lightly modded) to not get run over.

The 7th gen is a 5 speed, so 3k at 90 sounds right. I have a 6th gen I4 auto, and at 2k it does just over 50, 70 at 2.6k and at 3k it does 78.

It's an automatic, and I played with it a bit going to work this morning and the converter is definitely locking up. 4th gear at 70 is about approx 3.2k then the converter locks and it drops to 3k.

1997 Accord LX V6, Automatic

I thinks everything is ok because it's pretty smooth at that speed and everthing shifts ok.

ok, this is an acurate answer from a 5th gen V6 owner

both answers are for automatic trannys
DO NOT POST, well I'm at .... in 5th gear ...

at 60 mph you'll be around 2300-2400 in 4th gear AKA final drive or overdrive

at 60 mph with an I4 you'll be around 2700-2800 rpm

check you're owners manual either in the glove box, in the passenger seat rear pocket or under the seat, you'll see the shift points

BTW, the car is a great highway car
the revs are LOWER then an I4
I've done over 700 kms on a tank of gas going to toronto speeds from 120-180 km/h

the car is even better 5 speed
