The difference is the a3 is obd1 and the a2 is obd2. That just means the a2 has more sensors on the motor.

Essentially they are the same exact motor.

so would it be harder to put a2 into a non vtech del sol than a3 since the a3 is already obd1?

yes auburnBoy nice job on your reading comprehension skills. you can always take an a2 and tack on all obd1 stuff too, but its more work.

The A3 is most similar to the 2nd gen b16a that is OBD 1 and has the hydro tranny. All are very close. The only thing that differentiates them is the OBD level and a cable or hyrdo tranny.
For example:
USDM Motors- have slightly lower compression and usually a little less hp/tq than jdm/edm motors due to emissions standards
A2: OBD 2B(OBDII A is 96-98 in the 96-97 sols) w/hydro
A3: OBD1 w/ hydro
JDM/EDM motors
1st gen B16a: OBD 0 w/ cable tranny
2nd gen B16a: OBD1 w/ hydro tranny(similar to b16a3)
XSi b16: OBD 1 w/ cable tranny(at least according to most swap sites...some don't even list this motor)

jdm motors have more hp/trq than their usdm version, as we all know...but does the jdm del sol b16 have more hp/trq than its usdm version?

Yes. The JDM 2nd-generation B16A has 168hp @ 7800 RPM. The USDM B16A3/B16A2 has 160hp @ 7600 RPM.

The 170 number is PS, not HP.
