Default California drivers: Catalytic converters that pass Smog

Hey all. Short story is my 93 DX hatch just failed a pre-test smog last week. Turns out that my cat has failed me.

I replaced my stock cat last year when it failed with a new Monza cat.

Now a year later, the Monza cat is crapping out on me...and i havent even driven it in the last 3 months....

============

Anyways, I am looking for replies as to what aftermarket cat's you guys are using that HAVE CONSISTENTLY performed well in smog tests.

All help is appreciated.

oem. or just get another replacement one, then bolt it on there, take your test, go home put a diferent one on. that way it wont have a chance to crap out on you. thenonyour next test just swap it out again.

I used magnaflow high flow cat never had a problem.

If the cats crap out on you alot its not the cats its your motor. Somethings wrong there thats taking out the cat.

Luserkid X 2. Carsound/Magnaflow cats are the shiz. And if your cat craps out, you're probably burning oil, coolant, running rich, or running hot. In the case of the latter two, you will probably fail smog anyway.

running rich is a possibility....how can you check that? and how can you fix it?

Any ideas what to look for if that's the case? There is nothing obviously wrong with the car...its runs strong...no visible leaks anywhere....if i lose any oil, its not much.....coolant levels are pretty consistent...

Does it smoke anything? If it smokes that will show you if you burning anything. Tune ups always help for smog and daily driving, if you havent done it for a long time might want to. Go to a smog check place and have him run your car like a check but have him look at your A/F to see if your running rich or not. Might want to change out your fuel filter.

Not smoking at all. The car runs strong like I said...no visual cues of any kind. I am going to check the spark plugs tonight to see if they might tell me something.

Fuel filter was changed in the last couple of years.

Ok...yea, I have had bolt on for the last 6-7 years...just didnt know if it would make any kind of difference when smogging.

Thanks for the tips.

First try running your car as-is, there is a possibilty that your CAT has some oil residue in it. If you run your car for a half hour or so, run some Seafoam in your engine, and still don't PASS, I'd buy an OEM CAT have it "loosely" spot welded in, then retest.

If you are still having issues, PM me......
