Default My motor ate an alternator belt!

Just as the title states. Last weekend when I was at the track, I had just completed and run and was on the way back to the pits when the car died. Quick inspection revealed that my alt. belt was nowhere to be seen. I looked at it the next day and ended up having to removed the alternator b/c the string from the belt has wound up in the pulley. Fixed that, car still wouldn't start. Took some more stuff apart and discovered that 90% of the alt. belt was wrapped around the oil pump gear between the gear and the timing belt! I wish I had a camera, b/c I was totally shocked. Anyways, I ordered another timing belt and will put it back together next weekend.

Anyone got any idea what might have caused this to happen? The alt. belt was not even that old.

It was also happening to me. Reasons why could be the alt pulley is not in line with the crank pulley. Alt belt not tight enough. I had about 3 throw on mine on the street. finally went and bought the expensive $15 one, tightened the **** out of it like 3 different times. Never threw it again.

one question guys...off topic.......sorry how am i supposed to get this alternator tightened down really good.....i cant get ANY leverage on the thing.....it's just hand pushed down and then tightened......sometimes on startup it'll squeal for a sec and then stop......but how can i get a good leverage point on this thing.....it's a d16z6

use a long prybar and pry against the block and the alt, with the tensioner fairly loosened!

yeah, on the bracket that holds the top of the alt to the block there is a spot.

I had major issuues with my Y8 in my CRX, ended up being becuase i was using a Y8 pulley with a stock CRX alt, and they didnt line up by like 1/2 inch.

my LSvtec used to do that to me when the power got 450+whp. I went threw 8 alt. belts, 2 crank pullys and 1 alt. pully before i found the problem.

My motor was revving out so quickly that it was flexing the upper alt. bracket. I was using the pretty metal pc. but switched to the cast bracket off my spair b16 i had. The cast bracket wont flex and solved my problem.

Try switching to a cast upper alt. bracket instead. helped me A LOT.

this happened on my roommates car also. we rebuilt his engine, but we didn't have the alt. lined up perfectly with the crank pully. his would go maybe 40 minutes before it would just shred the belt. lined the alt. up the next day, and it never happened again.

Well, I feel better knowing that I am not the only one. The car has had 20+ dyno pulls and maybe 10 track runs on this belt. Just seems strange that it decided to go now. I am using cast brackets, so that can't be it. Freakin weird ****.

that happened to me once, the problem was, I had the belt on the wrong groove on the crank pulley, so it sheared it down and snapped.

lol using a screwdriver as a prybar that is.. Dont think it was big enough though to get enough leverage on it.
