This engine is from a '00 civic ex w/only 15k miles. Its been sitting for 1.5 years. Its about to get popped into my car and replace my dying dx engine.

Any special prepartions needed because of the sit-time this engine has incured? The guy who sold it to me says theres still oil in it. Think it has sludged? Should I take the oil pan off and wash it out and replace the gasket and put it back on?

It'd be the same as a car that hasn't started up in 1.5 years. It's not like the oil just turns into a big lump of coal if it's not stirred. I'd just change the oil

 

yeah man i got a friend that had a b16a2 motor in his garage and he kept it in his garage for almost 2 years now, and he had oil in it ever since he took it out, he recently dropped the motor into a 1990 crx si, and for some reason it dont seem as fast as how a b16a2 suppose to be, we were just guessing because its the oil, but then we changed the oil and it still the same thing.

 

Any more words of wisdom?

 

you'd prob have to relaly work with that oil since its so old it could chunk like sludge.. other than that if you kept good care of it you shouldn't have any issues at all

 

 

I'd also suggest cranking it w/the ecu fuse pulled to let it oil itself before it starts. Also, use the first quart you put in to dump it over the entire valvetrain.

Someone told me to maybe put some oil in the spark plug holes. Eh?

 

Take off the valve cover and hand crank the motor while pouring fresh oil all over it. Also wouldn't some leftover coolant inside harden?

- the only time I ever do that is when Im under the assumption my rings are bad and im doing a compression check


As for OP, change the oil, take the valve cover off and pour oil over the cam lobes and rockers. Then when you start it, as previously mentioned, pull the ECU fuse and let the motor turn over until the oil pressure light goes off. Then put the fuse in and start the motor up.

Okay, I'll take the oil pan off and completely clean it out, even windex the inside of the oil pan so I can see my reflection! Replace with new oil pan gasket torqued down to spec. Pour Mobil1 synth over valve train for 1 quart. Turn over engine by hand to get things lubed up.

Remember, at this point in time the engine is still sitting in my friends garage. When it get swapped in the car, I'll do the whole fuse pulled crank technique. Just for good measure, this engine is getting brand new OEM:

I would just change the oil, pour a quart on the valve train. If the motor only has 15k on it should need anything but fresh oil. How long do guys think those JDM swaps have been sitting around? No one drops the pan on those.

Unless the oil comes out chunky, just change your oil and filters

I'd also change the crank seal.
that what i did to my b16 b4 it went in..
it's better to change now ( out of the car ) then find out you
need to change it when it's in the engine bay. ( tight squeeze )
i also did the cam seal too..
