2000 ITR has no hatch release
I guess some of the 99+ ITR do not have a hatch release lever by the gas release? It's kinda inconvenient to have to go outside to open the hatch, especially when it's -20 out. Will see if I can get that programmed into the remote starter.

Don't be lazy, besides, it's almost May for christ's sake.
Also, the hatch release is mechanical, not electrical. You can't get it "programmed" into a remote.

joo guys really need to inspect ur car and check the FAQ section. Yes its electric but by no means do you have a trunk latch inside the car. Plus having that extra security for whatever you have in the trunk, unless of course the know they other way

I wonder if they changed the latch because the old version sucked?? My 97's latch only works half of the time, the other half of the time I here it click, run around to the back, and the damn hatch won't open

That's the locking mechanism, not the latch. The latch is not electrical..aka, you cannot unlatch the trunk/hatch unless you do it manually from the outside.

Not according to what I heard. They changed it because of federal regs having to do with making a hatch/trunk lock accessible from inside the car so you can't lock someone inside. At least, that's what I heard. I don't know how possible it is to unlock the hatch from the inside. I don't ride back there.
The old style latch in my '94 GS-R always worked, no problems whatsoever after 140K+ miles. I like it that way better. But it's not like I had a choice of latch when buying my '01 ITR.

The ITRs do not have an emergency unlock in the hatch unfortunately so don't get locked back there!
As far as being lazy and wanting to open it from the inside, don't you have to go back there to raise the hatch anyways? I see it as more convenient.

LOL... it would be pretty damn hard to get out with a roll bar back there.
FYI, I disable that manual pull lever for the hatch anyway for security reasons.

maybe the cable just needs to be adjusted? I just pulled mine off... but for those of you who can't live without it...
I know it's a pain, but when you have a top 10 stolen car, I do whatever I can... after 9-11, I couldn't go into any parking garage without getting out and opening my trunk...

Ok, I realize now one can open it from the outside as there is a little lever in the gap you stick your finger in. I thought you HAVE TO use the key and when you are in the car and having to turn the car off, go outside and use the key, that would be a pain.
The way it is now is fine. My old Celica you would either pop the hatch using the lever beside the gas lever, or use the key. In this ITR's case one can open without the key. It's all good.
