Hello H-T

I have a 1996 GS-R, bone stock.

Last night I was driving and the CEL light came on when I my rpm's went over 5000, normally I would hear VTEC 'kick in', but this time the light came on instead. The VTEC 'sound' did kick in, but i quickly took my foot off the throttle once i saw the light come on.

I've searched HT for this problem, and I'll probably go check what error it's throwing later tonight, but i'm just wondering if any of you guys have had this problem, and if you did, how you rectified the problem.

If you go check, i am willing to bet that it will be code 22 or 23. Mine has done this a few times before when VTEC doesn't kick in, it will throw a code. It throws the code because it knows VTEC should be engaging, but it is not for some odd reason. Check your oil and make sure the car is at good operating temps, etc. hope this helps

 

thanks for the quick reply, otiosity, i believe you're right as well. If this was the case, what steps should I take in order to turn the CEL light off?

 

either take the car to autozone or some place they offer free code pulling, or disconnect your battery cable.
