2nd, 4th & reverse feel rubbery...
What would cause all of the back gears to fill stiff or rubbery, 1st, 3rd & 5th feel great, you can hear the tranny shifting cleanly into each gear, however when you shift into any of the back gears it feels as if you are shifting into a rubber grove, it is sticky and does not shift cleanly. This is a new swap for this car, this B16 with a j1 tranny came from h-motors and has been sitting on a palate for about 2 years.

I have not taken it out for a spin yet, I wanted to get some more info before we take it for a drive, If I do shift into any of the back gears it feels as if the tranny wants to push itself out of gear.
you can spin an axle to see if it is indeed going in to gear. You should be able to spin it freely, hearing the gears mesh.
If that doesnt work try operating the shift rod directly at the base of the tranny and describe the noise and feel some more. Dont force it in to gear. Disconnect your shift linkage and if it does not go in to gears ok you're going to need to pull the tranmsission and inspect
The only other thing I can think of is inside the the tranny may just be gummy. Is it filled with oil? Try draining it and see if you get any junk out of it. But, if its not the linkage I'd drop the trans and inspect it. Its easy.

I will try to drain the tranny to see what comes out, I had kinda eliminated that due to the top gears shifting fine. Otherwise I get the same feeling if I try shifting directly from the tranny without the linkage.
I would probably drive first to determine exactly the problem and if there really is one. Its hard to diagnose the problem without more info on how it actually runs.
If that doesn't give you any clues I think the only thing you can do is crack the case.
Who knows, it may tun out to be fine b/c sometimes it needs a little spinning to get lube everywhere. If you hear grinding noises just take it out of gear.
Sorry to hear about the trouble by the way. That definately sucks. I am hoping to piece together a b16/b18 in a year or so. In the mean time I've been learning all I can about my D series while keeping it alive.

Sounds like a shiftlinkage or shifter problem...I mean the top gears are like butter but the bottom ones feel like going into rubber? What shiftlinkage did you use for the swap?

wonder if the shift shaft going into the tranny was damaged while sitting on the pallet, it happens.
2-4-R = the shaft going into the tranny case, bend the shaft and it won't go into those gears. Easy fix, but have to tear the case apart.
Looking at the shift shaft seal you should be able to tell if the shaft is bent.

yeahh...sure does sound like a shift linkage problem....its the linkage it self...alot rex's and hatches run into this problem when going from single to dual.....the problem is unless you have the authentic jdm b16 shift linkage for that motor, most likely the shift linage was custom....like taking a ls and cutting it and then re-welding it....alot of peeps that i know like to go with th gsr, just because of the fact that it has much different curves in the linkage.....but the ls or what ever one it might be, if its cut a liitle too less it will cause you to be shifting too hard going into 2-4-r or if its cut too long it wont go in all the way into 2-4-r...hope you understand...and its vis-versa the other way around also....dont get ones off of ebay that are made for b swaps in crx/ hatches....cause my little bro has one and hes gone through 3 trannys in less than a year...now looking for the real jdm linkage....that came with the original cable tranny....can run up to 250 bucks if you get lucky....haven't seen any for as long as i've been messing with hondas.....just one that i saw, and lost the bid on ...sold for 290....good luck...oh one last thing, its not the tranny oil, cause regardless of wether you have oil in there or not ...it would be doing it in all gears.....and if it wasnt the shifter, 2-4-r would not feel like that...only one gear out of the three back ones....but its all the back gears....now if it was like thrid and forth or second and thrid, then you have a perfect linkage, you just got jack for a useless tranny....
Yeah linkage problem... it happened to me as well. Best getting either the correct JDM linkage or HasSport or Place linkage. OR if you have an adjustable short shifter sometimes the throw is too short, and you are not getting good engagement!

sounds like a linkage problem to me...think about it 1 3 and 5 work fine but the lower set doesnt want to engage .... u probably have a crappy cut n weld piece...while ur at it might as well change ur shifter bushing and double check your linkage to make sure it is not too short or long

Sounds a lot like the shift linkage, but if that tranny's really been sitting on a palate for 2 years, and you haven't changed the oil yet...I'd start there. Check to see if the oil smells bad/if it does change it. I'd just change it regardless and put the tranny through the gears to get the oil in.
