today i put a cable j1 vtec tranny in my car after topping off the fluid. I take it out for a drive run thru the gears slow 1-4 go to shift in to 5th nothing so at a red light i try fifth while sitting still and it still wont go in its like its like i am completely locked out of it. reverse works fine and the other gears engage smooth but no fifth in a b16 tranny equals a sucky street car so any input or help would greatly appreciated i wanna get a few suggestions before i just go and take out the transmission again.

 

Need to pop the outer case off and see what it looks like. Did you just have it rebuilt?

 

If the transmission won't go into gear with the engine off, then you'll have to rule out the shift linkage and manually shift the transmission through each gear. If it won't give you 5th gear, then you'll need to replace the 5-R synchro set and maybe 5th gear too.

 

did you use the bitchpin or???

 

I knock it out and stick a screwdriver into the hole and twist, push, and pull it through the gears.

 

i put the bitch pin is back in there and no it wont even go in to fifth with the car off either. now would i be able to get a synchro kit from some where like gearspeed and call it a day or will i have to buy a new fifth gear also dont know much about transmissons but dont want to get ripped off when repairing it

 

It depends on how much down time you allow for yourself. If you've only got a day or two, then order the 5th gear. Otherwise, inspect it first and then order what you need. I couldn't tell you what gear you would need to order since I'm not familiar with what kind of gearing it has. Gear Speed or some other board member would probably know.

You can buy a B-series 5th-reverse synchro set from Honda.

now i have been reading and it sell like the 90-91 trannies are the odd ***** cuz it seems like they are the only trannies that can now swap parts with other years i have the ls tranny i just took out my car so i probablly could get a gear from that if it fits its a 93 tho i am going to look that up now

 

the gears are probably fine, it takes a lot to expletive up a gear, your synchro hub is prolly fuxord. My 3-4 synchro hub fell apart when i took it off the shaft after this last race i went to back in december, LOL!!

 

so even if i can go in to reverse just fine its just the synchro. thats cool i got the price on that i guess ill start taking it back out tommrrow

If the synchro sleeve teeth get mashed up enough, it can allow the sleeve to slide all the way in one direction but not in the other, or in the worst case, it can't move far enough in either direction to engage either gear. It doesn't even have to be the 5th gear side that's damaged to prevent it from going into 5th gear.
