proper gap spacing for butt welding pipe?

Default proper gap spacing for butt welding pipe?

hello all, i just wanted to see what the proper gap spacing is for butt weldin 2 pieces of piping together.

i have tried various spacing, and a buddy of mine told me 1/16th of an inch spacing

I usually stick a piece of .035 wire in between the parts in a couple of places. Works for me.

it really depends on the wall thickness of the pipe you are welding together.

just bend the wire in a "v" shape and stick it in there, tack a couple spots, pull it out and away you go.

make sure you back purge if you leave a gap and are welding stainless.

i usually chamfer/v groove my butt-welds so i dont have to have a gap.
is it nesesary?

no matter what it is on a butt gap the space needs to have half the material thickness
