Default speedo off need help

ok so here is my problem. i drive a 93 Del Sol S i got clocked by a cop the other day, he said he clocked me doing 67, on my speedo it was 80, kinda blew it off, then a couple days after i was driving on the interstate and i was doing about 80 but then i looked at the speedo of the car next to me (it was one of those brand new civics with the digital guages) it still said 67, so thats about the time i figured: my speedo is off by 13 MPH so i asked my GFs dad about it (who is a honda mechanic, ASE cert the whole 9 yards) and he didnt really know what it could be either, cept for like the sensor in the tranny. he said just see if u can get it recalibrated, now here is the problem: i dont know where to go for that, and nor does like NAPA or Advance Auto Parts. so you guys got any ideas?

thanks
Carlos

PS: i didnt do anything to throw my speedo off, the only thing i did was add a CAI, put 14 inch Del Sol SI rims on it instead of my 13 inch hubcaps. and thats it. no suspension work what so ever, or anything like tat

so u didn't notice that when u leaving ur driveway u were moving at 5mph it read 18mph?

EDIT:

I'm sorry, I was j/w that

As for ur problem, as far as I know if ur speed sensor (The one inside the tranny) is good......I'm pretty srue there isn't a way to adjust ur speedo, somewhere in the forums it talks about taking the needle off and measuring it with a digital speedo through the cig lighter and then putting the needle back on....but that just seems stupid to me...but hey, if it's teh only way it's the only way

when you put the 14" rims did you change the overall diameter of rim+tire? if you did, that would be the reason your speedo is off...

he would have to go quite a bit smaller on the overall diameter to get it 13 mph off

But yeah tires sizes would help in determining the cause

Although the overall diamter of the rim and tire will affect the speedometer...I really don't see 13mph change in any tire/rim size changes that can fit a honda

if was an issue of over-all tire diameter...

his speedo would read slower then he was actually traveling...

say tha speedo says 70.. & he gets clocked @ 84mph..
thas what happens...
eheh
that happend to me.. in my old p/u i lifted it.. did bigger tires.. & tha speedo was off by 14mph... heheh ::

===========

if yoru GFs dad is a honda mech.. eh shoudl know what to do...

bring it to your honda parts deal that u trust.. ask them.. coudl be a sensor...

most liekly is....

good luck man

ok i prolly shoulda mentioned one thing now that i read the posts, it is off gradually, when im stopped, it reads 0, and when im driving behind an old lady doing 25 my speedo will read a little over that, not 15 over. so the gap gradually gets bigger as i speed up

Sounds like your tires are smaller than the stock ones

What size tires are on there?

Smaller diameter tires will make your speedo read faster than you are going. It is by a percent increase. You are off by quite a bit. Mine is off by 1% from my tire change with rims and that means at 100 mph mine says i'm going 99mph. Mine are bigger than stock. To get that far off you either put on low profile tires on stock wheels or you have a broken sensor.

so there is no recalibration question? its just that my sensor might be broken, cus my tires are not big at all, P185/60R14

your tires are smaller than stock size that is why it is off. You can go to a shop and have them recalibrate it.

This is your stock tire size 175/70-13 This still shouldn't make you speedo 13mph off at 60mph though. I may be your sensor.

one bolt holds the clip for the vss in place and then you just pull off the retainer clip for the speedo cable and swap the vss.
