non-honda starting/running problem...
my friend has a 1982 toyota corolla 5sp rwd. he has been having some problems with getting it started, and once it is started, keeping it running. it will run ok for a while, then at a stop idle down around 200-300 then die sometimes. think it mite be the fuel filter. any thing you guys mite think it would be?
here we go toyota:
check your
battary
alternator
stater motor
fuel system
plug and wires
now you checked everything and find nothing wrong ? hah toyota
you have carbon loaded engine
you have a choked, sticky cab or fuel injectors
and many untold issues..

new battery ~ 5000 miles ago
alternator checked out ok
starter should be okay, not clicking or anything thing like that
new spark plugs ~ 2000 miles ago
so we are thinking its fuel filter, or fuel rail. would that car have a fuel pressure
regulator, it is carburated, so idk for sure.
carbon loaded engine? carbon deposits on pistons?
he recently cleaned the carburater so that should be good to.

Instead, there's a float valve inside which keeps the float bowl filled to the proper level. If that valve leaks, the fuel pump will keep overfilling the carb, flooding the engine. Getting that float valve adjusted correctly is part of carb rebuilding.

Does the choke pull-off work OK or is is all sticky with gunk?
By 1982 most carbs weren't real simple. Most carbs need some specific adjustments for choke & fast idle, so you usually won't get them set up properly by doing random adjustments. Get a shop manual. And most likely there's little solenoid-operated valves or levers which raise idle based on AC or other loads, maybe those aren't working right?
