Speedometer not working "please help"
93 Honda Civic SI hatchback 1.6L 5 speed
I am having a problem with my gauges in the car. It didn't happen till I put a Cold Air Intake in the car, but i dont think that has anything to do with problem.
The problem is Speedometer and mile gauge not working, but the tachometer, fuel, and hot and cold gauges work. I did the self-diagnostic to the car and it came up with a code 17 I looked in my hanes civic book and it said (VSS) vichical speed sencor. I replaced (vss $100) and still did not correct the problem. I then purchased a cluster for ($305) and it still did not fix the problem, $405. dollars later and no clue????? If you have any advice please help!!!!

dang man that sucks, i have that same problem on my car a 95 civic ex, im bout to go bout a new cluster and i dnt want to replace the vss, but im not really any help but good luck with it if i can get mine workin ill let ya know, i read on here try cleaning out where the cluster connects with like a cotton swab, i dno search around a little bit sorry wasnt ne help
I doubt that the instillation (s/p?) of the intake would have messed something up. I had the same exact problem with mine when I changed the clutch slave sylinder. It indeed was my vss.
All I can say is don't buy a new cluster until you know it's the actuall problem. Ask a friend if you can swap clusters for like five minutes.
Check ALL of your fuses, wiring....etc. You never know.
Sorry, if I wasn't able to help much. But I tried. Let me know if you need anything else.

That is the problem that I had right there. I paid the dealership 4 hours of labor, swapped clusters, new VSS and still had nothing. I finally ran 3 brand new wires to the VSS myself (power, ground and a signal) and it worked perfectly and cost about $2. Good luck

Hey J,
I got a question? I checked the connection of the plug and the VSS, and there was light green corrosion off the VSS 3 conector tabs and the female plug I used compressed air and a wire brush and small screw driver to clean the female plug, much better but i forgot to check for voltage before i cleaned it to see if there was current.where did you get the wire part you replaced, and i take it that you just cut off the male conector and soldered the wires together, or did you trace the complete wire to the cluster. Honda wants $985.00 for the wireing harness for a 93 civic .......

I have the same issue in a 93 DX Hatch...
I changed the VSS and the cluster also, when I get a chance I'm going to run new wires also. Thanks for the info 5 Skware

I'm on my third cluster.
First one the odometer stopped working then the speedo started going crazy and moving constantly. Second, the speedo would drop when I used the turn signals every so often, and finally it just died. Now this third one shoots to like 60 mph whenever I start it up from time to time.
This is absurd.
I'm thinking of pulling all of the wiring and checking them.

"SPEEDOMETER WORKS" Thanks to (5 SKWARE) The problem was: one of the tabs of the female connector ( 3 wires positive, negative, ground) that plugs into the (VSS) vehicle speed senser was bad.... Watch out because when i hooked up the ohlms to it, it read current was going threw it, but the think was the tab was broken on the tip so when i plug it in the vss it wasn't touching anything. How I fixed it: I went to the junk yard and snipped off an exact female connector that almost looked brand new from another Honda. I cut the bad one that was on my car and stripped the wires on the remaining wires under my hood and the new female connector wires and soldiered and srink wrapped each of the exact wires together. A little electrical tape and i was done. Time: a total of 20 min to fix. I did the extra steps of soldiering and srink wrapping because the part sits on the transmission and i didn't want to have this problem acure later down the road because of vibration... thanks again J....
