Default CRANK PULLEY FELL OFF! help plz!

ok so im driving on the highway and about to get off the highway when BAM my car makes a loud bang and feels like a huge rock just nailed my car and then some whinning....so i pull over to find NO CRANK PULLEY....we found it about 50 yards back....

my question is what can this do to my engine? my timing belt was tight and did not look or seem to have slipped but my engine made some whinning noises..... messed up pistons... bent valves? or just do i need a new crank pulley(oh god i hope its this one)..i am not starting my engine till i get another crank pulley even on and found out some information on what i could have possible done to it... I was not driving slow either i was atleast going somewhere in the 50-40mph range

plz help with some information i just finished putting this engine in and can not understand how the **** this happened first thing is distributor and starter don't work...then altenator goes....and now this all withing 2 weeks WHY!!!

The weight of the pulley is intended to help the engine keep spinning, similar to the flywheel. Unloading the weight quickly could in theory cause the piston to accelerate and hit a valve, but the crankshaft would have to jump teeth on the timing belt for that to happen (and I might be wrong about the acceleration, my physics aren't that great these days). If the worst did somehow manage to happen, I don't think it would have made a whining sound. If anything in the engine smashed into itself, you would have heard it before you heard the pulley hit your chassis on it's way out. The damage would have already been done, starting the car up would only further break something that's already broken.

My best guess about the whining is some sort of harmonic mess caused by the crank being unweighted.

What I'm more worried about is how the pulley came off in the first place. The bolt holding it in place is well known as the most stubborn bolt on the entire car, it's not the sort of thing that just backs off. I'd suggest looking into it.

did the entire crank pulley come off?

like, everything that connects to the crank(harmonic balencer, the three or so pulleys, etc...)?

if so, start lookin fo another engine...

no just the pulley came off... everything else was still under the plastic cover... and we checked the belt to see if it was loose but everything seemed perfectly fine... i have no idea how the pulley came off you also have no idea how pissed i was when i went to pop my hood and see nothing there!

im going to get another crank pulley and take my head off to see if there is any damage...right now its raining 8( just my damn luck

If just the pulley came off you should be fine. Find/buy another crank bolt, put it in and try to turn the motor by hand. Take the spark plugs out so it'll be easier. If nothing binds and it spins freely, your good to go.

And as a side note our crank pulley does not double as any kind of "balancer" Domestics generally used these but our hondas do not. Our crank pulley is there to simply drive the accesories.

Good to know, but why did they make it so heavy? (I don't expect billet aluminum in mass production or anything, but it seems overly heavy)

you should HOPE this is nto the case.
My friends 92 civic HB (yes not an EF btu same principles apply) was driving down the road when all of a sudden he heard a large bang, and his car stopped (you said YOU stopped teh car correct?)
When me an a buddy went to look at it, his crank pulley had fallen off. We had no idea why, its a d15b7 we stroked to 1.6 for fun.

So, we swapped in MY engine (i had d15b sohc vtec in eg, so we used my old crappy d15b7) and the car runs perfectly fine, actually we sold it. While we cleaned the block off, stripped it and sold it for scrap aluminum, we noticed that the pulley would NEVER stay on. in fact somehow the crank itself had been stripped where the key/bolt was.

Basically the motor needed a brand new crankshaft. This I think is the worst case scenario. Now ask yourself some questions.
once you get the pulley on and turn it, does it stay on? or does it come off easy?
look at the condition of the crank, where the pulley goes on, is it stripped?
now if your crank pulley is off and wont go on. ouch man Im sorry but new engine time I gues.

My pulley came loose at a track event a couple of months ago and your discription of a whining noise sounds very famiiliar.....

Your crank pulley holds your timing belt in place and without it the belt can walk off its pulleys a bit and rub against the timing belt cover. I bet if you take off the timing belt covers you'll find scouring from the belt.

I've had a crank pulley rip off my H22. Timing is the worst that can happen. Unless you have experienced it, you don't know what it can do. More then likely your crank pulley bolt snapped like mine. You will need to get it removed, I used an easy out and it came out. I got a new crank pulley from a used H22A and I got a new crank pulley bolt from honda, with some lock tight to seal the bolt in. H22 are known for loosening there H22 crank pulley bolts until they vibrate to failure.
