Default how long does my engine have?

hey guys, i have my new project car a few weeks away from getting back outon the road. it is a 91 crx si. still trying to get the body and suspension straightend out but i was wondering how long my engine had. it has 279k blows smoke out the tail pipes and consumes oil. i hear a slight ticking from the engine but nothing majior. i was going to try and do a little tune up on it to see if it would help, plugs, oil, oil filter, do a coolent flush. not asking it to last forever just trying to get a summer out of it. what do you think? also open to sugestions

how much oil is it burning? you might want to source out another block that is good and has fewer miles just to get you by right now.

If you keep adding oil, I've seen sohc hondas run for over 300k, and on 3 cyclinders. Just keep up the mainteince and the engine will get you from A too B.

As long as you don't rage on it, it will probably be fine. It's a honda. It might not be making a lot of power and it may be guzzling oil, but it will probably keep running for a while longer. Just make sure you keep an eye on the oil level. Of course I'm assuming you were gonna just drive this thing because I doubt you'd be racing on a motor with 280k on it :-D.

yeah, it should hold up for a long time really. it would be nice to do a leakdown test to figure out where the oil is comming from.

how much does it eat? i would say run it like it is, get some gunk to throw in the oil to thicken it up. and baby the **** outta it.

Well I'm guessin it's either rings, valve seals, or both. I had an Acura legend with 288k on it and amazingly that thing didn't burn much oil at all and didn't smoke. It did however make a shitload of noise from the hydraulic lifters when it was cold. It sounded like someone hammering on my hood with drum sticks. Buy yeah there are many hondas that go past 300k as long as you take care of them.

10 40 probably. Maybe 20 50 if its hot where you are. I like the idea of running synthetic on it too. Try Amsoil. That stuff is pretty good and not terribly expensive (like $4-$5 a quart).

Don't waste your money on synthetic oil that you know is going to burn up. That's terrible advice. Your motor is not worth more than $100 and you would go through that much in oil in a couple months if you drove your car every day. Buy cheap as **** 10-40... and if your D blows up, spend and afternoon putting in another one...

Yeah good point but I don't think we've established how much it's actually burning?? If its like a quart every 200 miles then syn might get spendy real quick .

Wouldn't hurt to start looking for another cheap A6 for a replacement just incase things start going downhill, you'll have one on-hand. Good luck!

Like the recycled Autozone Oil. Or Golden State oil that you can get for like 99 cents at the corner gas stations
