Default Strange Noise (Integra)

Originally posted in Integra Forum. However, I never seem to get credible help there. So I am trying here. Thanks

The car is making a strange noise that is comming from the drivers front wheel well. It occurs when I am driving and is really hard to describe, but ill do my best.

I notice the noise when the wheel is being turned.
The noise sounds like pressurized air and comes in short bursts. (usually two)
The best way to describe it is the sound of nos purging. (Not to be funny)

The one thing that might help is that my driver side cv joint has been ticking when taking turns, but not horribly. Not sure if this is a cause.

Just not sure what else to say about this. The noise is very strange. Please Ask any questions and Ill try and answer as best as possible.

Thanks

Hows the level of your power steering fluid? shooting any fluid? Maybe something in your power steering rack, maybe not fluid leakage, but maybe fluid transfer from the pump to the rack and vice versa.

Thanks for the response. I actually dont have ps/ac/cruise control due to the previous owner (was going to be a track car). Ive owned the car for a 1 1/2 yrs and nothing wrong. Maybe abs? But I dont have any problems with brakes. I have tokico gas shocks, but I doubt that would have anything to do with it.

Might be something rubbing against the tire. Kind of a long shot, but it is worth checking out. Jack up the front and look for anything obvious. Might as well spin the tire by hand too. Obviously without the weight on the tire the sound might not happen, but it is worth a try. Or even start the car and spin the tire faster, make sure someone is in the car just in case it should fall off the jack stands.

well, since it doesnt have PS, was the rack capped off correctly? or were the line inputs/outputs left open?

So like stated above, the noise happens in a straight line as well. Just happens randomly so that elminates power steering. So maybe abs? Just lost and need help. It seems to come more frequently everytime i drive.

If the ABS was making a noise like that, it would make the ABS light go on in your cluster. Check the fluid of the ABS just in case. Since your axle is clicking, i'd replace that since its always best to first replace the stuff you know is wrong. It sounds to me it might be your struts though. B/c just sitting here and thinking about that sound you described, i don't know wtf else if could be. I know my tokico blues make a shitload of noise even though only one of them is blown.

Thanks. Yea I know my shocks arnt blown, but I do have the blues as well .

Im going to take the wheel off on wednesday (day off) and see what I can find.

Now that I think about it, the strut is a good possibility.

Both of my fronts are the Blues and even though only one is leaky, they both are super-loud. Good luck finding the noise.

UPDATE:

Car is still making noise and more frequently now. So I decided to finally pull the wheel off and look what I found....

Isnt this the steering hub? And would this be the cause of the noise, thus explaining why when I turn the wheel I can hear it?

Thanks

Ok. Obviously this is supposed to be seated in the casing right? So is this bad? And could this be causing the strange noise that I am hearing?

That is the out tie rod boot. It looks to be ripped, but that isn't anything that would cause a loud noise you are describing.

Ok Thanks Man. Other than that I really couldnt find out whats cause the noise. I do know that it is not a rubbing noise, but more of an air pressure sort of noise.

Hey have you checked your engine mounts, my DC2 was making suspect noises like your describing a few months back, so I replaced the engine mounts and it is now quiet and alot better to drive.

No its not that. My car would be shaking horribly if it were that bad.

It looks like that boot to your rack is also ripped. Check the play in that tie rod end and get it replaced before worrying about anything else.
