What is the metal ring there for? Is it supposed to be loose like that?

Its called a fireingring. It helps seal the headgasket.

How are you supposed to center it?

Thing about mine is when I put it on it was already centered. I would line it up with the sleeves in the block. When I switched headgaskets (because that cometic blows) mine looked like it does in that picture.

They do, but it depends on the clearance's and the condition of block I believe.

So would it be better to just not use the metal ring? Also, why would OEM be better than this gasket? If I removed the middle metal ring, would it still be worse than a OEM gasket?

When you say "blows", do you mean that it is not good, or do you mean it literally blows? LOL. Just wondering. I'm gonna be pushing 15-20 psi.

Currently I am pushing 17 creeping to 18-19 lbs of boost. With a step deck block and that headgasket can cause the head to lift. While I had it on my car it worked awesome until I started boosting hard on my car after the tune and such. Then once that happened the car started sparatically overheating. 2 weeks ago I took the cometic headgasket off and put in a oem copper sprayed and havnt had a problem since.
Now Im now downing cometic because the headgasket I have wasnt good in the situation that I had placed it, but seeing how well his oem headgasket holds up, I wouldnt trade it for any other. Now when I mean it blows, I mean that literally. haha. It blew on my setup, but like I said earlier it wasnt made for such a block. If I were you and I had a one hundred dollar bill laying around Id just go ahead and order a oem headgasket. Then go to advanced auto parts and buy a can of copper spray and call it a day.
You might not have problems with the headgasket, but why have to worry about it because now it seems like you do

EDIT: In my oppinion the oem headgasket would be much better because it is tried and true. It is used on a stock honda and people never have problems with them. Kinda the same thing why everyone recommends Honda replacement parts. Now seeing as I have tried both I would highly recommend the oem gasket!

Well damn. Since I have already bought the Cometic gasket, would it help if I took out the metal ring? Or should I just leave it in and install it?

Don't take the ring out or it won't seal. Just fit the ring back in the middle layer like a puzzle piece. I used to use Cometic HP gaskets running 23 PSI on a B16 and they worked fine.

I never said that it was horrible I just wouldnt use them again. I would think with a flat deck block it should seal fine.

No, dont take that ring out. That will like daniels said restict it from sealing correctly. Like I said earlier just try to put it back where it would go.
