I've Been Toying around with doing a custom exhaust myself
Have any of you guys ever done it? It just seems like all the OTC exhaust systems out there just don't suit my taste. So my question to you is have you done it? What parts did you use and where did you make the exhaust exit out at?
In my mind I thought it might look cool to have something exiting in front of the passenger rear tire, at like a 45 degree angle with a nice 45 degree cut on the tip.
I understand this would involve cutting the side skirt.
Thoughts?
Again, thank you for your time.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add that I have some cheapo aftermarket muffler that is on the car now that has an exhaust outlet a little larger than my pinky.
It makes whatever gains I have from having VTEC useless.

your vtec is still helping alot even though you have a "restrictive exhaust." depending on what motor you have (if you've done a swap or whatever) your vtec may not even effect the exhaust valves, only the intake.
so to your question, i assume you have some welding experience... if you plan on including a header in your build up, i would recomend the factory manifold from a y8 if you have a D-series, or if you are set on aftermarket header, go for something of pretty good quality. be sure you include a flex pipe near your firewall to keep the system from crackin or hanger mounts from breaking when the engine is under load. i know you can buy pre-bent pipe and cut to suit and weld them together. this way you get the smooth flow from a mandrel bend. i don't know where you plan on putting the muffler, that is if you are planning on one,but the stock cavity under the body is a great place (that may rule out your side exhaust idea.) though i think that side exhaust would be stinkin cool if you can make it work. it'd be cool to see some pics of the end product too. good luck man.

by the way, i havn't done it but i have thought alot about doing it also. i have seen plenty of custom jobs done wrong though.
yea side exhaust is almost totally out of the question, if you take a look at the underbody of the civic it has the cavity for the exhaust and thats about it everything else is the bottom of the car and ur exhaust would end up hanging really low and ur ground clearance would be terrible
ive done mine under the gas tank, and its angled and only takea a few bends, but the clearance is still somewhat tight
it looks something like this

heres another one

but i say this is the easiest diy exhaust (minimal bends)
but do urself a favor and dont cut corners and do it right the first time
ull appreciate it later
trust me i kno

My weekends are mostly free time spent around the house. I have a three year old and he really likes to help dad do stuff. I wouldn't have him around me if I were doing anything dangerous or anything like that though.
It's pretty cool having my little helper do stuff with me. So yeah, I have a lot of time on my hands.

well if your just trying to spend money and want to do it for fun i say do it. if not why dont you get the kteller exhaust? mandrel bend..... lol. but if you do it make and sure you take lots of pictures and post a diy exaust thread
Actually, I was trying to save a little money. Having a 3-year old and a 2 year old makes trips to Disney and stuff like that more important than a super-badass exhaust with a titanium tip. (Yo.)
Plus I like the sense of accomplishment doing things like that give me.

A couple things to consider when choosing an exhaust.
What is the car used for? On a daily driver, a full race setup is far from optimal. Yes, it will flow better at high rpm. But unless you drive around town constantly near redline you'll actually be losing power (torque mainly). A certain amount of backpressure is a good thing (too much kills top end, too little kills bottom end). Not to mention noise, it will eventually become irritating and tends to attract the attention of cops.
The under-the-axle exhaust is a good way to smooth flow out, until you hit a speedbump and the whole deal gets ripped off or crushed. Again, if it's a daily driver, this will become a major irritation.
Pipe size.... Again this has to deal with flow. Too small and it's choked off. Too large and the flow is disturbed and will pulsate or create waves bouncing back and forth at all but high rpm. Some of the most crazy NA (b series) setups won't use over 2.5" piping for full race applications. For most people with basic bolt-ons and swaps 2-2.25" is more than adequate. Boost is a whole other story...
Regardless of what you put in there, make sure a resonator is part of the equation or prepare for an attack of the bumblebees. even if it's only a glasspack....
Have fun with it, make something pimp and functional...
