Default any 85mm guys in here? any overheating problems??

i assembled an 85mm shortblock and head for a friend of mine and he has been having overheating issues ever since.

the block is an 85mm JG engine dynamics pro series block that is a closed deck ( ie: welded in blockgaurd), and head. to me the sleeves look a little thin to my "turbo style" liking.

the machinist said the reason it ran hot was because of the Copper Spray i put on the headgasket(never had an issue with over 45 heads so far tho) so i took it back off, put anew gasket on and did it all again, just for it to do the same thing

replaced, temp sensor, temp switch, thermostat, gauge cluster, coolant, more

to me it seems as if the sleeves are too thin to actually act as a heat sink and are not pulling the heat away from the block, and cant get a chance to ge the heat to the radiator.

is it possible to make an 85mm bore on stock sleeves?

I don't think it's possible to do 85 on a stock sleeve, nor would you want to. I agree with Hella, I think it has to do with the closed deck. I have heard many times of people with "blockgaurds" having cooling problems, and the fact that your buddy's is welded in scares me.

thanks guys

yeah i dont like the fact that it was a closed deck block, to me it looked more like a bandaid than anything else. it was welded then the block was decked.

kinda looks like a prelude motor

i dont know what blockgaurd youre using but i know a few ppl running with blockgaurds without a problem. Some blockgaurds can cause hot spots where they are located. i suggest you check into that. also make sure the blockgaurd has enough holes for cooling.

if all fails..you can always ghetto-tech it by drilling more holes into it haha

I run a closed deck 85mm but its a Dart block. Never had any overheating problems except 1 time on the dyno when I switched to a 1/2 radiator and the fan was about 5 feet away since the dyno pit wasnt filled yet.

85mm= .040 over on a B20 block
81mm isnt going to get there on stock sleeves.

i would take the head off and just drill some holes in the blockuard. that should help.

i dont think thats the case otherwise the closed deck h22's would be having issue's. is the block guard at the very top?

head was checked by local machine shop, they said it was good, but i had them do a tiny bit of resurfacing to get a clean seal

the machinist said it was because i used "Copper Seal" which i have never NOT used it and have had no issues, so i didnt use it this time, and it did it again

im gonna toss my hondata in the customers car and see whta the actual water temp is reading

I got the same JG block as you, 85mm with a closed deck. mine was done about five years ago, so i dont know if they changed their design since then. But mine does have holes drilled in the deck, and never had overheating problems.
