Default Engine rebuild question

WOW, to take my car in is just RAPE in the money catagory. i own a 95 integra GS-R DOHC 1.8l vtec, 220,000km (guess the previous owner bashed on this engine) and its eating oil like mad and pushin blue at high rpms. i dont yet know how much it will cost if i do it with my dad, as i am unaware what the parts cost yet. a few mechanis say for THEM to do it it will be roughly 5k, and for an engine swap place 3.5k

i guess my main question is... why is the VTEC so expensive to rebuild.... i thought the only dif was variable valve timing. also is there any cheaper solution out of this??

thanks in advance

Bearings, oversized pistons & rings, gaskets, oil pump, water pump, bore&hone.

Doesn't even come close to 5k.

Bearings & Thrust washers from Honda: $300 MAX
Pistons & rings: $2-300 depending on which ones you go with, 4-500 if forged, another $300+ if you decide to go with forged rods as well.
Gaskets: 2-300$ ?
Not sure on price of new pumps.. but not much.
Bore and hone- $100.
ARP Headstuds- $100

That's for a complete overhaul pretty much.

Labor. It will take a lot of man hours to rebuild it. A lot of the time is just spent checking for proper clearances, and cleaning. Building an engine is just like cutting something-- "measure five bajillion times, and cut once"--check for perfect clearances everywhere, and assemble once.
