whenever i get on it a ton of black smoke shoots out, mostly when it hits vtec. i know that a little is alright, but this is more then a little. what could it be? headgasket? and i do have a check engine light.

 

could be valve seals, pistons, blown headgasket?... lots of possibility.

 

how do i come to a conclusion? check to see what check engine light is?

 

check what CEL code you are throwing and go from there..........by your passenger side kick panel theres a plug get a paperclip or wire connect both ends to it.......then get a helms book to see what code its throwing.......i think theres a thread on here that shows you how and what the codes are..........search is your friend.

Also try a compression and or leakdown test and it will let you know whats up.
