Default '84 Civic hesitation/bog

Ok, so I did a bit of searching, and I've done a bit of work on the car, but I still don't know what's going on. It's got a Hondamatic transmission, and when I'm sitting at a red, then give it gas when the light changes the car has a tendancy to stall a lot, dropping the revs down to between 2-500 RPM. If I lay off the gas, it usually comes back to idle, then I can slowly give it gas and it'll accelerate. Once I get moving and out of first gear, it's fine. Actually, it seems that if I let it roll a bit first it'll be ok. The strange thing is, sometimes the hesitation is very pronounced, and sometimes the car runs perfectly. I haven't been able to figure out what makes it run either way. The other thing is, when I'm driving in first or second, it seems to have less power if I try to floor it than it does if I lay off a little. The engine just seems to lose power.

Now for what I've done... the primary fuel filter has been changed, and it seems like my fuel hoses need to be replaced under the hood because I can't pull them off the secondary filter without nearly destroying them, so the secondary filter hasn't been replaced yet. The air filter has been changed, the spark plugs seem fairly new, and the cap and rotor have been changed with stock Honda parts. The spark plug wires seem fine. I've adjusted the idle closer to about 8-900, as it was sitting just below 750 before and idling a little rough. The car runs beautifully when the choke is on, but the choke also keeps the idle at around 1000 even in gear...

I've noticed that spraying the carb with carb cleaner seems to help for a little while... it'll run really well for about 15 mins to half an hour, and seeing as having the choke in makes it run so well I'm wondering if maybe I'm running a little lean. Any suggestions on that? I've also read that the O2 sensor could be at fault for the bog... maybe? I'm planning on stripping and cleaning the carb next week when I have some time off school, but is there anything else that I should consider doing before then? I've got some plans for building up this car, but I'm not going to do anything to it until it's running the way I like it.

I think I'll go try adjusting the fuel mixture, but if anyone else has any suggestions feel free to post. Thanks.

1. vacume leak

2. carb issue

3. combination of 1 and 2... check for vacume leaks around the base of the carb

4. distributor?...

good luck. Have you tried http://www.redpepperracing.com ?

It could be a vacuum leak... the PO said that he had a couple vacuum hoses fail on him, so he replaced them... I'll poke around. I'm off school as of Friday, so it looks like this car will be getting nearly overhauled then... thanks.
