Default Timing Belt questions. Pictures included!

Nice place. Hopefully I can get a little help from some of the pros around here. Just bought this 94 DX, 5 speed. 130k miles. The second owner didn't know if the belt had been changed or not. I don't have a garage or tools right now and don't have $550 that the dealers want to change it. (indy shops want $450)
Can you please take a look at these pics and tell me if you think this is an original belt, or what kind of life you think it has left in it?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the response. Does this mean I'm on borrowed time, or can these belts go a lot longer? I know it's supposed to be done @ 100k per the book.

its a honda belt, but it doesn't look like its in bad repair. Is this a dealer-serviced vehicle?

Should be fine until you get the cash right away!, until then it does look like the OEM belt so most likely it has not been changed.

the belt looks in good shape...
just keep an eye on it.
when you see signs of bad wear, replace it...

timing belts can last well over 100K
the life depends on several factors...
but by your pics, you should be good for now

Unless the belt is in blatantly bad or damaged condition, it's really not possible to judge the "remaining life" of a Honda timing belt. My personal suggestion (assuming you're reasonably mechanically inclined) would be to pick up an inexpensive Chilton or Haynes manual at your local auto parts store, a timing belt kit from Pro Street, and DIY at a friend's house.

Thank you all so much for the time you took to reply. This is a cool place. I've always driven domestic muscle cars. This Civic is a lot of fun though, and its gas milage is hard to beat. Seems like a great car and a great community. I look forward to spending more time with both!

I just changed mine on my d16 and it was cake

seriously all you need is a 10,12,14,15,17 mm sockets and open ends and some extensions.
Have a shop loosen the crank bolt and take it home and do it yourself. So easy
You can use the screwdriver trick to torque down the crank bolt, but I don't recommend doing it that way.
follow this tutorial

I had no problems doing mine. except getting that crank bolt free.

Man, sounds like it might be worth my while to drive down to FL! lol...
I'm hoping that the belt will hang in there for a few more weeks till I can find some buddie with a friend with a garage full of tools..
Is there any difficulty in doing the water pump at all, or is it cake once you're in there?

its hard to tell by looking at the t-belt. i changed mines a year ago, driven 18k miles and the t-belt looks exactly like yours (94 d15b7). i wish you were closer, its really not that hard to change the t-belt and water pump. air tools is your best friend on there.

How the hell are yougonna just look at it and tell it's fine, you don't know when it could go basically. Let me tell you bud, when you get ready to do you're timing belt and water pump, it will be cake as long as you got the time or half the day anyways with the right tools, or most and some cleaner like acetone or brakleen you can buy at auto parts stores. Make sure you have everything at TDC, you should invest in a haynes and read it constantly like me, and clean the side of the block while you're at it with some extra brakleen before you put on the new waterpump.

actually, you can see if the belt is wearing (cracking, breaking gear treads, etc.) when you can see this sort of wear, it's time to change...
