I was planning on getting a 98 Civic EX, stock engine:

1. how can I safely increase power with swap?
2. how much is a complete turbo kit cost?
3. other component cost? (cam, pulley, etc)

Basically my question is I want the civic to be turbo, without swap. Is this possible?

With a swap? Expect about 125 whp w/ a B18C1 w/minor bolt ons. The cost of a complete swap for that would be around $2000. If you went turbo depending on how you went about it a friend of mine made about 140 whp with a GReddy turbo kit on a beat VTEC D15B and then made about 175 whp with a front mount IC on about 9-10 psi. All together that cost him about $1500.

Good Luck. There is many articles online about installing turbo kits on D16's (Your motor). There's also less costly "junkyard" turbo kits, they take a lot more fabrication. In your case I think I'd go with something a little more "bolt up" like the GReddy system.

 

125 with a gsr?? um thats a bit low, a stock gsr should get about 145-155 at the wheels

Sorry, I dynoed it myself. It was an '01 GSR w/ 25K. It made 128 hp stock and 136-138 w/ just the intake tube (no box/filter). Both values are corrected also. It was done on a Mustang Import Chassis Dyno.

What crack head thief are you buying a complete gsr swap from for $2k??? And have we forgotten about axles, mounts, exhaust mods? If you've got a hookup, possibly... but for the vast majority... at least $3400 with more **** needed.

 

Just turbo the y8(what comes stock in the 96-00 ex's)

I did. Its a blast. 220whp at 8psi, bumping to 10 psi in may with a dyno tune.

I pieced my setup together and ran me about 1500, and installed everything my self, which helps cut costs down!

The biggest thing you wanna look at when turboing, is the tune. Itll make your car or break your car.

1. bolt on modifications are normally the safe bet, but you can pay mechanics to do their tricks for added performance

2. depends on the kit, it can range from "free" if your lucky to "5000+"

3. like #2, it depends on brand, type, color, etc... i'd recommend before researching items is to figure out what you plan on doing with the civic. whether its a daily driven car, drag race car, road race car, show car, etc...
