Depends on what your long term goals are for the car. If you want to go big, you should go with the swap and wait to turbo it a while later. As far as cost, it all depends on who will be doing it. You or a performance shop? There are many here, including me, that will install or have installed a turbo without help from a shop, so the turbo would be cheaper.

When I say big, I mean do you plan on running 12's in the 1/4 or will you be satisfied with high 13's to low 14's? If the later, just go with the turbo kit and forget about a swap. My choices of a turbo kit would be either the Drag or the Revhard(these are pretty much the same only the Revhard is more $$$), but this is only my opinion. There are others out there like Greddy or FMAX, but I like the Drag and the Revhard's set-up better.

u dont really need to beef up your engine...i guess if you wanna boost over 10 lbs(not sure but for my engine i heard this) u should upgrade the pistons, piston rings, rods, get some titanium retainers and get a new head gasket to lower your compression. if youre gonna go over 8 lbs u also need to get a 8:1 fmu and 310 cc injectors

custom turbo kit is te way to go man. Pick wat you want and build it the way you want.

The manifold will fit a SOHC if you redrill the holes.

Re: i wanna go turbo.... (Slow_ass_4dr)
ben@importparts has a great groupbuy going on for a Drag GenII and GenIII kit for $3200(around $2900 - $3100 normally), but that includes other nice additions(ie..tial 35mm WG,colder spark plugs, vortech FMU....) and reduced prices on other goodies(stage II clutch, larger injectors, in tank fuel pump, Greddy EBC) to help you accomplish your goal. The revhard is going to be quite a bit more(go to http://www.revhard.com to verify) I think the comparable stage II kit goes for $3500 w/o the extra equipment that I mentioned.
As far as boost, I will be boosting 6-9psi daily(which is the norm with stock internals) any more and you would need to upgrade your internals to be safe. With 6-9 psi you should be able to run mid to low 14's in the 1/4 - a lot better that 16's with your current set-up.

Re: i wanna go turbo.... (PolosportZ81)
since your motor is a 98 SOHC...might as well keep it and get the turbo. Rebuild your internals if u wanna boost over 9-10 psi. If funds are limited like me.... just get the tranny conversation and the turbo man.....later

Re: i wanna go turbo.... (PolosportZ81)
get the B18 and then turbo it... you will be unhappy if you just turbo the 1.6, and i am speaking from experience. Good Luck!

You will run just as fast with the LS with simple bolt-ons. I have beaten many sohc turbo cars. Not unless you planning on building the motor and boosting more than 10. Go LS then turbo in future.

Yeah, low boost. Or stock Greddy boost. But, referring to him--he wont be fast unless he builds the motor then runs more boost.

I run 13psi around town and 15-16psi on a stock d16z6 (100% stock internals) without a problem. And its very very very fast. It will eat up a badly tuned b-series turbo no problem.
Tuning is the key.

Re: i wanna go turbo.... (liam821)
I really agree Liam, don't build the motor to withstand the detonation you will have with bad tuning. Instead, tune the motor so well that detonation will never occur. That way you do not need to worry about the bottom end. I have heard of people boosting near 20PSI on stock internals, but guess what? They are not stupid because they have the motor in a state of tune so fine that it is nowhere near detonation.

That's right...... its all about tuning! This is an area where folk don't concentrate enough on. Spend your money tuning and not on so called big HP engine parts.

Tuning is far more important then building the motor. You shouldnt build a motor just to handle more of your bad *low boost* tuning...you should build a motor because you want to run more then a perfectly tuned stock motor can hold.

Re: i wanna go turbo.... (ek9t)
are u talkin about tuning the air/fuel ratio? what exactly are u referring to when u talk about tuning? i always thought u had to strengthen internals to boost higher but now im seeing alot that alot of people are running high boost w/ proper tuning..can u please explain what u mean by "tuning?" and what i need to be doing it? thanks(DRAG3 on GSR)
