Default Repainting Rocker Panels (what paint to use?)

Over time the black portion on the lower rocker panels has deteriorated due to rock chips, ect. I want to repaint that portion just to improve the appearance. My question is, what paint product should I use for that area? Would an undercoating type product be appropriate, or should I stick with a traditional paint? I basically want to restore the matte finish.

Actually, I am referring to the metal underbody rocker panel (mine doesn't have the plastic pieces.)

If its the spot i think you're talking about, then some undercoating products might be the best bet. I think u can get the stuff at autozone or kragen. Trim paint or anything similar to it probably wont do too well b/c that particular area is prone to rock chips. The undercoating stuff is rubber like (less prone to chipping away). Only thing i dont know is how glossy the undercoating stuff is.

You can even undercoat it first then spray it with trim black. Just make sure the undercoating specifies that it is paintable, if it doesn't you'll have a big mess when you try to spray over it. I learned the hard way.
