Changing the final gear of a GSR to LS
A few people have said that its a good idea to take the final gear froma LS and put it in my GSR..........WHY is what id like to know. All they say is....well thats what i heard. Does this gear give you better top end, AND how hard is this to do....anything else imight need? thanks
ps-its a 95gsr
ps-its a 95gsr
Thats why GSR's get worse gas mileage than LS's right?
:S
It may only be 1 mpg, but its still better.
The GSR is meant to rev higher, thats the way Honda designed it, thus they geared it correctly.
Fuel economy isn't dictated so much by RPM as it is throttle position

Fuel Economy is definatly correct. They swap the 5th gear to an LS gear for better freeway/higher speed gas mileage. If you ever go on the freeway with a GS-R fifth gear set, you can see that you are most likely over, if not well over 3000rpms. My friend has a hatch with a GS-R swap and on the freeway he is pullin about 4400 rpms at like 65mph. I would like to get an LS fifth gear set when I buy my GS-R. I understand that's it's not just rpm's but also throttle position, but it helps a little bit.
I'm at 4000 rpm at 75 mph.. give or take a couple.
But if you do the 5th gear swap, you lose the pep the GSR has in 5th.. I love bein able to cruise around town in 5th or just be able to drive in 5th and actually be able to move.

in order to change the final gear you would also have to change the countershaft.
I wouldn't worry about losing top end becuz a gsr tranny is good to a little past 160, doubt ur going to be getting that high.
imo, i wouldn't do it. u'll lose aceleration and spend a lot of time and money just to "cruise" in 5th.

There is a 500rpm differance between the LS fifth gear and the GSR. You aren't going to see any differance in fuel economy i can almost garuntee it.
There is an article on team-integra.net that explains why throttle position is what effects your gas milage, not RPMs. I'd say you'd lose gas milage with the LS because you have almost no ***** on the freeway, its frustrating. I hate my LS tranny.

i have a b16 tranny in my gsr and i'm the same...around 4300 at 80mph. still get about 30mpg (prolly 75-80% hwy driving). is it *really* that serious to make the LS 5th gear swap?

What???
How exactly is 5th gear going to help you get traction in first gear?
Please, enlighten me.
And WHEN do you EVER have to shift into 5th in the 1/4 mile???
Pple are so stupid.

Your post is one of the stupidest by far. You know there is a difference between 5 gear and final drive right?!?!
ALSO people that make enough power that run out of gear in 4th before the traps need to shift to fifth. They also need to working on gearing at that point but its another story.
Know what ur talking about.. then talk ****.

I misunderstood, I had 5th gear stuck in my head for some reason.
Even still, I did a quick search and I came up with this:
[B]It's still a dumb idea.

I typed in final drive and searched 24 pages. Lots of info on switching in the ITR FD and stuff, but very little on switching in an LS..
I wonder why??

I wouldnt do it either. For a full out race car there is slick sizing to change final gearing. For a street car i wouldnt want an LS FD.
